Paul supporters dig in on war issue

U.S. Rep. Ron PaulU.S. Rep. Ron PaulWhen U.S. Rep. Ron Paul said in a GOP presidential debate Sunday that American troops should never have gone into Iraq, former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney objected, asking Paul if he had forgotten about the terrorist attacks on 9-11.

Paul’s local supporters shook their heads in bewilderment over Romney's interjection.

"Most of the Republicans are trying to get us to believe we went to Iraq to hunt Al-Qaeda," says Ken Biretta of Ewing Township, spokesman for the grassroots network, Mercer County Ron Paul 2008 Meet-up Group. "They neglect to mention that Al-Qaeda was not aligned with Saddam Hussein. In fact, they were opposed to Saddam."

Presidential candidate Ron Paul calls himself a Constitutionalist, who’s apt to invoke a negative whenever the conversation turns to taxes, and for that the Texas lawmaker is known on Capitol Hill as Dr. No.

The fact that he was one of only a handful of Republicans in the U.S. House to live up to his moniker when he resisted giving President George W. Bush the authority to invade Iraq simply gilds the Paul package in the minds of his supporters.

Paul picks up N.J. endorsement

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, a ten-term Congressman from Texas, has picked up his first New Jersey endorsement: Dr. Murray Sabrin, the 1997 Libertarian candidate for Governor. The 71-year-old physician was elected to Congress in a 1976 special election, lost the 1976 general election, won a 1978 rematch, and gave up his seat to run unsuccessfully (against Phil Gramm) for the GOP U.S. Senate nomination in 1984. He won .5% of the vote as the Libertarian candidate for President in 1988, and returned to Congress in 1996. Sabrin, a Ramapo College Professor, received 114,172 votes (5%) in the '97 gubernatorial race, and finished fourth in the 2000 Republican primary for U.S. Senate. Paul supported Sabrin in each of his races.
