IN CASE YOU MISSED IT ... PROPERTY TAX REFORM NOT REAL AT ALL

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT ...

IT'S NOT REAL AT ALL

Property tax reform may be one-shot deal

Editorial, Daily Record of Morris County, April 5, 2007

Gov. Jon Corzine said "The results are real," in signing legislation this week to reduce property taxes for most New Jersey homeowners. The bill establishes a sliding scale for tax relief: households earning $100,000 a year or less will see a 20 percent reduction, up to $150,000 will get a 15 percent reduction and up to $250,000 will get a 10 percent reduction. The reduction will average $1,051 per household.

The governor can call this the "real" thing all he wants, but there's nothing "real" about it.

NO RELIEF FOR NJ TAXPAYERS; OTHER EXPENSES ERODE TAX CUT BENEFIT

Editorial, The Express-Times, April 5, 2007

When is a tax cut not really a tax cut? When you can see the "savings" being chipped away -- dollar by dollar by dollar -- months before the check has been placed in the mail, before the tax credit has been credited. Such is the case for nearly every property owner and renter in New Jersey.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT ...

NOTHING LANDMARK ABOUT 'TAX RELIEF'

Editorial, Asbury Park Press, April 4, 2007

Gov. Corzine signed property tax relief legislation into law Tuesday, trumpeting it as "landmark."

"I am proud to sign into law a remarkable combination of relief and reform that seemed impossible just a few years or even a few months ago," Corzine said.

The only thing remarkable about it is how Corzine and the Legislature believe voters will be fooled into thinking it is worthy of the adjective "landmark."

PROPERTY TAX REFORM FAILS TO DELIVER LASTING RELIEF

Editorial, Home News Tribune, April 4, 2007

Now that Gov. Jon S. Corzine has signed into law the 20 percent cut in property taxes promised to most homeowners, the question for New Jerseyans naturally becomes: Are they better off because of this plan? The disappointing answer is: Not by a long shot.

KYRILLOS: Property Tax Package Not Real Reform

Senator Joe Kyrillos, (R-Monmouth/Middlesex) issued the following statement today in response to Governor Corzine signing legislation to provide a 20 percent tax credit to property owners and cap tax increases by schools and municipalities at 4 percent.

The 20 percent tax credit is not sustainable and despite the fact that state spending has increased nearly 50 percent over the past 5 years, schools and towns are now being asked to cap spending.
