(TRENTON) – Assembly –approved legislation Assembly members Joan M. Quigley, Jack Conners and Paul Moriarty sponsored to eliminate New Jersey’s absentee ballot system and replace it with a “vote-by-mail” system continued advancing today toward law.

The bill was approved by the Assembly in June and was released Monday by the Senate State Government Committee. It’s sponsored in the Senate by Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) and Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D-Union).

“Choosing who to vote for can be a confusing and stressful process,” said Quigley (D-Hudson), chairwoman of the Assembly State Government Committee. “Casting a ballot shouldn’t be. Moving to a true vote-by-mail system will make it easier for people to exercise their right to vote and increase public participation in the democratic process.”

PLAN TO MAKE NEW JERSEY 11TH STATE WITH ‘SILVER ALERT’ SYSTEM FOR MISSING ELDERLY CONTINUES ADVANCING

(TRENTON) – Legislation sponsored by six Assembly Democrats to make New Jersey the 11th state with a “Silver Alert” system to notify the public about missing elderly people continues advancing.

The plan is based on the “Amber Alert” system used by state police to locate missing children.

The measure is sponsored by Assembly members Wayne DeAngelo, Sandi Love, Paul Moriarty, Pamela R. Lampitt, Cary Rodriquez and Elease Evans.

The bill was recently released by a Senate committee and is now pending before appropriations committees in both houses.

“Unfortunately, it’s common for an elderly loved one suffering from dementia and other ailments to wander,” said DeAngelo (D-Hamilton). “This can be dangerous and even life-threatening for our loved ones and stressful for caregivers and family. This new system would be a common sense step toward protecting those who deserve our best, the elderly.”

Rau-Hatton not expected to seek Assembly seat

Gloucester Township Mayor Cindy Rau-Hatton, a Republican, is expected to seek re-election in 2009, and not run for the State Assembly.

Gloucester Township Mayor Cindy Rau-Hatton, the highest-ranking Republican elected official in Camden County, is expected to pass on a chance to run for the State Assembly in 2009 and instead will seek re-election to a second term as Mayor.  Insiders had viewed Rau-Hatton as the only significant potential challenger against the Democratic incumbents, Paul Moriarty and Sandra Love.

Possible GOP Assembly candidates include Gloucester Township Councilwoman Shelley Lovett, ’01 candidate Cherie Jenkins, and Black Horse Pike Regional Board of Education member John Custodio.  Custodio, well known in Trenton from his years as a Vice President of Fleet Bank, was courted by the GOP in 2007, but declined to run.

Rau-Hatton was elected in 2006, winning a May non-partisan election.  Voters subsequently approved a referendum that made Gloucester Township municipal elections partisan, so the mayoral post is now up in November 2009, instead of May 2010.
