Flannery endorsement of Christie is significant

Christopher Christie won a major conservative endorsement today with the announcement that Bridgewater Mayor Patricia Flannery will support his bid for the Republican nomination for Governor.  Before running for public office, Flannery spent years as a pro-life activist and longtime advisor to U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith (R-Hamilton).  She was also a political consultant who managed Michael Pappas’ campaigns for Congress in 1996 and 1998.

Scaglione enters race for Somerset Freeholder

Bridgewater Council President Pat Scaglione says he'll seek the Republican nomination for Somerset County Freeholder.

BRIDGEWATER – Bridgewater Council President Pat Scaglione earlier today talked to Dale Florio and notified the Somerset County Republican chair of his intentions to pursue a seat on the Freeholder Board.

“I’m a 12-year council veteran and I’m in the race,” Scaglione told PolitickerNJ.com tonight, at a candidates’ forum sponsored by the Bridgewater Republican Committee, where Scaglione and his fellow competitors made their respective cases.

Montgomery Township Committeeman Mark Caliguire, Bernards Committeeman John Carpenter and former prosecutor Thomas Roughneen are also vying for the seat being vacated by retiring Freeholder Director Rick Fontana.

“The Democrats have made such a mess of the state budget, that our budgets are really hurting,” said Caliguire, who pledged if elected to examine greater shared and regional services.

Sources: Fontana won't pursue another term as Somerset County Freeholder

Bridgewater Mayor Patricia Flannery

BRIDGEWATER - Republican sources say veteran Somerset County Freeholder DIrector Rick Fontana this week told party leaders he will not run for reelection this year after serving since 1998.

Fontana’s departure from the seat traditionally occupied by a Bridgewater resident opens up a possibility for Bridgewater Mayor Patricia Flannery, who’s well positioned to receive the Republican nomination.

If Flannery decides she doesn’t want to move up, sources say young gun Councilman Matthew Moench is another potential GOP candidate.

Lance: 'I am extreme in love for wife and dog'

State Sen. Leonard Lance (R-Hunterdon) and state Sen. Diane Allen (R-Hunterdon)

FLEMINGTON – The Stender supporters started lining up on the sidewalk in front of the old Hunterdon County Courthouse moments before state Sen. Leonard Lance (R-Hunterdon) arrived with a contingent of women for Lance, including state Sen. Diane Allen (R-Burlington), and his wife.

Some bitter back and forth ensued between the Stender and Lance women on the state senator’s home turf of this 7th Congressional District, where Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Fanwood) and Lance are in a toss-up battle to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Mike Ferguson (R-New Providence).

For a few minutes it looked as though the women here thought they could settle things on their own, in Flemington’s version of “Street Fight.”

Bateman set to challenge Kavanaugh

Assemblyman Christopher Bateman is prepared to challenge incumbent Walter Kavanaugh in the 16th district State Senate primary next year, if Kavanaugh does not retire. Several sources close to Bateman say that the decision to run for Senate in 2007 is final.

The 73-year-old Kavanaugh, who has had serious health issues in recent years, has served in the Legislature since his election to the State Assembly in 1975. He moved up to the Senate in 1997 when John Ewing retired. Bateman, 49, is the son of former Senate President (and 1977 GOP gubernatorial candidate) Raymond Bateman; he was elected to the Assembly in 1993 after serving as a Somerset County Freeholder and Township Committeeman and Mayor in Branchburg. Kip Bateman is a partner in former Governor Donald DiFrancesco's law firm.

Some insiders say Somerset County GOP Chairman Dale Florio, who has been anxious to avoid a divisive primary, will likely lean on Kavanaugh to retire gracefully.

A move by Bateman would open up an Assembly seat in this solidly Republican district for the first time in ten years. Possible candidates include Freeholder Denise Coyle, Bridgewater Mayor Patricia Flannery, and outgoing Freeholder Kenneth Scherer.

The Star-Ledger reported this weekend that Senate Minority Leader Leonard Lance faces a possible GOP primary challenge from Assemblyman Michael Doherty.

Somerset begins search for a new Freeholder

Somerset County Freeholder Kenneth Scherer announced yesterday that he would not seek re-election to a fourth term, saying that he wants to spend more time expanding his landscaping and nursery business. Republicans had viewed the 47-year-old Scherer, a former Hillsborough Mayor, as a possible Assembly candidate when his political ally, Peter Biondi, retires. Two Hillsborough officials are considered possible candidates for the seat -- Mayor Robert Wagner and Councilman Anthony Ferrara -- but there is no guarantee that Somerset Republicans view Scherer's seat as automatically going to Hillsborough. Three other Mayors have been mentioned -- Patricia Walsh of Green Brook, Amey Mesko of Bedminster and Albert Ellis of Watchung - but several GOP sources say that those three lack the countywide appeal to win a Republican convention. Other possible candidates include Branchburg Township Committeeman James Leonard, the chief lobbyist for the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, and Monthomery Councilman Mark Caliguire, the brother of Bergen County Executive candidate Todd Caliguire. Bridgewater Mayor Patricia Flannery would be a formidable candidate for higher office in the future, the insiders said, but that Somerse Republicans would not run her with Freeholder Rick Fontana, who is also from Bridgewater.
