The race for Vas' chairmanship

Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts (D-Camden) has removed indicted Assemblyman Joseph Vas (D-Perth Amboy) as Chairman of the Assembly Commerce and Economic Development Committee.  Four other Democrats serve on the panel, but two of them are not really contenders: Upendra Chivukula (D-Franklin) is unlikely to give up the chairmanship of the Telecommunications and Utilities Committee, and Sandra Love (D-Gloucester Township) is a freshman who is not seeking re-election.  That means Roberts will likely choose between Pamela Lampitt (D-Cherry Hill), a two-term legislator who represents a neighboring Camden County district, and Albert Coutinho (D-Newark), the panel Vice Chairman who was elected in 2007 after serving briefly in 1997.

Corzine's weakness in South Jersey could influence LG pick

Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney could help Jon Corzine pick up working class voters from South Jersey.

Gov. Jon Corzine has a potential problem in South Jersey, where a new Quinnipiac University poll shows him trailing former U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie by five points, 42%-37%. The poll defines the South Jersey region as Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties.  In 2005, Corzine beat Republican Douglas Forrester in this part of the state by 49,825 votes, a 56%-44% margin, and lost only in Cape May County.

In South Jersey, Corzine has a favorable/unfavorable rating of 43%-43%, and an upside-down approval rating of 42%-44%.  Nearly half the voters (47%) say he does not deserve to be re-elected, and 70% say they are dissatisfied with the direction New Jersey is headed.

Against conservative Steven Lonegan, the former Mayor of Bogota, Corzine is ahead by nine points, 42%-33%, among South Jersey voters - not a great showing against a Republican whose name is not recognized by 88% of the region's voters.

Some Democrats suggest that Corzine could boost his chances in the region by picking a South Jerseyan for Lieutenant Governor.  And some Republicans think Christie could enhance his lead by doing the same thing.

***MULTIMEDIA PACKAGE*** Oliver, Lampitt, DeAngelo on Enactment of Bill Enhancing Energy Savings Improvements

Assembly Democrats News Release

OLIVER, LAMPITT, DeANGELO ON ENACTMENT OF BILL ENHANCING ENERGY SAVINGS IMPROVEMENTS

(TRENTON) - Assembly members Sheila Y. Oliver, Pamela R. Lampitt and Wayne P. DeAngelo today issued a multimedia package on the enactment of legislation they sponsored to authorize state, county and municipal governments and school boards to more easily implement energy savings improvement programs.

The new law allows governments to enter into long-term lease-purchase agreements with energy companies, providing public buildings the benefits of energy saving technologies - which include new, efficient HVAC systems, improved insulation and efficient lighting - without the upfront spending normally required.

The sponsors contend the measure (A-1185) will create new jobs and could act as a catalyst to promote and sustain environmentally friendly - or "green-collar" - jobs.
