LAMPITT WELCOMES PLANS TO CREATE NURSING SCHOOL AT RUTGERS-CAMDEN

(VOORHEES) – Assemblyman Pamela Lampitt (D-Camden) on Wednesday welcomed plans by Rutgers University to create a School of Nursing at its Rutgers-Camden campus, calling it pivotal progress for South Jersey and health care quality in the region.

“This is great news for New Jersey, but especially South Jersey and our overall quality of health care,” said Lampitt (D-Camden). “The nursing shortage shows no sign of ebbing and has serious implications for our aging population, but programs like this will help ensure high-quality nursing will be available throughout New Jersey’s health care facilities.”

DIEGNAN, LAMPITT & VOSS PUSH BILL TO ENSURE STUDENTS KNOW NJ STARS ELIGIBILITY

(TRENTON) – With New Jersey students set to return to class, Assembly members Patrick Diegnan, Pamela R. Lampitt and Joan Voss are sponsoring legislation to ensure high school juniors and seniors are aware that they could be in line for a NJ STARS full-tuition scholarship.

The New Jersey Student Tuition Assistance Reward Scholarship (NJ STARS) program provides full-tuition county college scholarships to students who graduate in the top 15 percent of their high school class.

“No high school student should be left unaware that they could qualify for NJ STARS,” said Diegnan (D-Middlesex), the Assembly Higher Education Committee chairman. “NJ STARS is allowing thousands of deserving students who might not have had the means to attend college to work towards a degree that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Every student who has a chance at the same success should know they, too, could have the same opportunity.”

(TRENTON) – Legislation Assembly members Pamela R. Lampitt, Louis D. Greenwald and John F. McKeon sponsored to protect children from and help communities deal with sexually oriented business has been advanced by an Assembly panel.

“Adult sexually oriented businesses may have First Amendment rights, but that doesn’t give them carte blanche to exploit children or erode the property values of nearby homeowners,” said Lampitt (D-Camden). “We need to provide property owners and communities with all possible tools to keep porn shops and other adult-oriented businesses in check.”

WISNIEWSKI & LAMPITT BILL ADDING DRIVER INATTENTION TO POLICE REPORTS MOVES FORWARD

(TRENTON) – Legislation Assembly members John S. Wisniewski and Pamela R. Lampitt sponsored to require police accident reports to include whether drivers were distracted at the time of an accident is moving forward.

The Assembly voted 61-14-1 to approve the bill during a recent session.

The measure now heads to the Senate for further consideration.

“A quick glance at directions, a newspaper, a family pet or even the radio dial can mean the difference between a safe trip and a car accident,” said Wisniewski (D-Middlesex). “With distracted driving becoming the rule rather than the exception for many motorists, details concerning driver inattention should be required information on all police accident reports.”

OLIVER / LAMPITT / GREENWALD / LOVE / CRUZ-PEREZ BILL REQUIRING STATE TO REPORT ASSAULTS & DEATHS AT STATE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALS ADVANCES

(TRENTON) – Legislation sponsored by Assembly members Sheila Y. Oliver, Pamela R. Lampitt, Louis D. Greenwald, Sandi Love and Nilsa Cruz-Perez to require the state to publicly report assaults and deaths at state psychiatric hospitals has been approved by the Assembly.

The legislation (A-2949) is a direct response to delays in the release of statistics on assaults at Ancora Psychiatric Hospital in Camden County. Lawmakers had requested the information following several high-profile incidents at the hospital, including a patient escape and several deaths.

“The well-being of patients at state-operated hospitals should never be in doubt and breaches in the safety net cannot be hidden from view,” said Oliver (D-Essex). “Any violent incident at a state hospital must be made part of the public record so health officials and legislators can take appropriate and immediate action.”

(TRENTON) – Legislation Assembly members Gary S. Schaer, Pamela R. Lampitt, and Albert Coutinho sponsored to initiate a pilot program to educate high school students on personal finance management so they can avoid irresponsible spending habits that lead to excessive personal debt and bankruptcy was released Thursday by a Senate committee.

“Too many young people have taken an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ attitude to their personal finances, setting themselves up for financial hardship before they even get their college degree,” said Schaer (D-Passaic/Bergen/Essex), a professional financial advisor. “We must do a better job of preparing students to be financially responsible adults.”
