In wake of Guadagno pick, New Jersey Right to Life unlikely to endorse Christie

Now that Republican gubernatorial nominee Chris Christie has selected a pro-choice running mate, the state’s biggest pro-life advocacy group is unlikely to endorse him.

“With the lieutenant governor pick, I don’t see how we can endorse someone who has a pro-choice running mate,” said New Jersey Right to Life Executive Director Marie Tasy.

Christie today tapped Monmouth County Sheriff Kim Guadagno to run for lieutenant governor on his ticket.  She revealed her that she is pro-choice at a press conference with Christie in Asbury Park today.

Tasy stressed that the endorsement decision is not up solely to her, but to a panel of four leaders of the group’s political action committee that includes her.

New Jersey Right to Life stayed out of the Republican gubernatorial primary, since both Christie and Lonegan said they were against abortion.

“We take Chris Christie at his word that if elected he will work to enact life-protecting laws that are overwhelmingly supported by New Jersey voters,” said Tasy.

More conservative endorsements for Gregg

State Senate candidate Guy Gregg has received endorsements from former Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler, the New Jersey Right to Life PAC, and the National Rifle Association. Gregg and Sussex County Freeholder Steve Oroho are battling to succeed State Sen. Robert Littell in the 24th district.

Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose, who is backing Oroho, criticized NJRTL for supporting Gregg. "Guy Gregg was pro-choice for nearly 40 years," McHose wrote in a letter to NJRTL Executive Director Marie Tasy. "Now he says he's pro-life, and a big part of that change appears to be this campaign and this endorsement."

After Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen endorsed Gregg earlier this month, Oroho criticized his rival for accepting the endorsement of the "liberal" Morris County Congressman.

“Steve Oroho is desperately trying to convince Republicans he’s the conservative in the race for Senate, but that’s just talk, said Schundler. “The true conservative is Guy Gregg and the supporters and advocates lining up for Guy’s candidacy prove it.

But McHose says 24th district Republicans shouldn't listen to Schundler either.

“Is this the same Bret Schundler who told conservatives that he became a Republican ‘because of Ronald Reagan’ while conveniently forgetting that he was working on liberal Gary Hart’s presidential campaign in 1984, the last time President Reagan was on a ballot?
