SUMMER VIOLENCE DEMANDS ACTIVE SHERIFF

County Parks and Roads are Frontlines
in Fight Against Gun Violence;
County Police Must Increase Patrols

(Newark, NJ) -- A young man in Orange is gunned down randomly in the street. Another taxi driver in Newark is found shot in his cab. In Irvington another young man is shot in the head. In Newark, three men die in three attacks in one weekend--and the next weekend there are three more. Responding to the heavy summer violence, Detective Rich Mastrangelo today again stressed the need for more County Police presence in the key areas of Essex County parks and roads.

"The man stabbed to death collapsed at North Munn Avenue near Vailsburg Park. That's a county park. Another victim, shot in his car, was just two blocks from Stuyvesant Avenue. That's a county road. Those areas should be under watch by the County Sheriff as head of the County Police," said Mastrangelo.

"Mayor Booker knows how critical the county areas are to Newark's public safety," continued Mastrangelo, candidate for Essex County Sheriff. . . .

The Hamlet Chronicles

Add one more item to the list of Hamlet Goore's foibles -- he must have a bad sense of direction. When the Attorney General's live-in boyfriend found himself in need of a Motor Vehicles Commission office to straighten out a mess with his drivers license and car registration, he travelled miles out of his way to go to Elizabeth.

The MVC has offices in North Bergen, where Goore lives, and also in Irvington, where he works. If Goore, for some reason, didn't want to use the local office in North Bergen (located 1.37 miles from his home), the MVC has seven offices closer to his home than Elizabeth: Jersey City, Lodi, Englewood, Wallington, Newark, East Orange, Bayonne. If Goore was going during his lunch hour (he works for the Township of Irvington), and didn't (for some reason) want to use the local office located 1/2 mile from his office, he could have made it to East Orange, Newark or Sprinfield faster than Elizabeth.

Rich Mastrangelo for Essex Sheriff

SHERIFF CANDIDATE MASTRANGELO:
COUNTY POLICE NEED NEW LEADER
IN EFFORT AGAINST VIOLENCE AND GANGS

At County Park in Deadly Area
of Newark, Vows to Be Active Sheriff

(Newark, NJ) -- Going to Essex County's West Side Park on Thursday, Detective Rich Mastrangelo called attention to the runaway problem of violent crime in and around County Parks and Roads. Those areas are under the watch of the County Sheriff as head of the County Police.

"West Side Park, so near to the Irvington/Newark border, is right in the middle of one of Newark's deadliest areas," said Mastrangelo. According to a Star-Ledger analysis, which plotted on a map all the murders in Essex County from 1998-2003, the West Side neighborhood had a dense concentration of homicides. "This County Park area should have a constant presence from the County Police."

"Mayor Booker chose this spot to announce his Safe Summer Initiative against gang violence. I applaud his plans to bring all law enforcement agencies together to bring discipline back to our streets. But in order to help the Mayor bring discipline to our streets, accountability must be brought to our Sheriff!"

Rich Mastrangelo for Essex County Sheriff

SHERIFF CANDIDATE MASTRANGELO:
NIGHT OF NEWARK VIOLENCE
DEMANDS ACTION

Booker's 'Safe Summer Initiative' Should Be
Bolstered By County Police Presence

(Newark, NJ) -- The streets of Newark rang out with gunshots on Sunday night. Eight separate shootings in rapid succession left two people dead and 11 injured. Detective Rich Mastrangelo today called for more action by the Essex County Sheriff's Office to tackle the escalating gun violence.

"Newark is facing a crisis in homicides this year. Murders haven't been this high in ten years," said Mastrangelo, a candidate for Essex County Sheriff. With 50 murders so far this year, Newark may see even more violent deaths in 2006 than last year's record of 97 killings.

"This wave of murders is being driven by a culture of lawlessness. People are acting like it is the Wild West, settling every dispute with a shoot-out," said the decorated law officer. "Every law enforcement agency in this county should be working full throttle and in union to stop this violence. We've already seen with Operation CeaseFire just how much can be accomplished with good teamwork, but we need to do even more. As Sheriff, my first act will be to increase patrols by the County Police."
