Just a reminder to Drew McCrosson: today is filing day

Republicans had a major blunder on filing day in 2005 when one of their State Assembly candidates in a key district simply forgot to file his nominating petitions.  Former Upper Township Mayor Drew McCrosson was supposed to be GOP Assemblyman Jack Gibson's running mate in the 1st district against two-term Democratic Assemblyman Jefferson Van Drew and his running mate, first-time candidate Nelson Albano.  McCrosson's screw up left George Cecola, a perennial candidate who had ran as an independent for State Senate in 2003 and against an incumbent Senator in the 2001 Republican primary.

There were allegations at the time that McCrosson's failure to file was deliberate.  Some pundits believe there was a deal between Van Drew and State Sen. Nicholas Asselta, who believed he could protect Van Drew's Assembly seat in exchange for Van Drew's agreement that he would not challenge Asselta for the Senate in 2007..  State Republicans tried to mount a write-in campaign to nominate former Cumberland County Freeholder James Sauro, but they were unsuccessful.

DeANGELO / MILAM / ALBANO ’RIGHT TO FILE’ CONSUMER-PROTECTION LEGISLATION APPROVED BY ASSEMBLY

Measure Would Invalidate Any Consumer Contract That Requires Consumers to Give Up Their Right To File A Complaint

(TRENTON) – Legislation sponsored by Assemblymen Wayne P. DeAngelo, Nelson T. Albano and Matthew W. Milam to safeguard consumers by invalidating any contract that requires the customer to waive their right to file a complaint has been approved by the Assembly.

The bill (A-2465) would nullify any contract that contains language negating the ability of a consumer to contact either law enforcement or state, county or municipal authorities to file consumer complaint.

“When companies are using contract clauses that force consumers to waive their right to file a complaint, something must be done,” said DeAngelo (D-Mercer/Middlesex). “Preventing a customer from filing a complaint undermines New Jersey’s long standing tradition of consumer protection. Without such protection, the ability monitor a business’ compliance with existing law is severely compromised.”

Lawmakers Aim to Toughen Decade-Old Penalties; Spurred to Action by Illegal Dumping that Closed Beaches Over Labor Day Weekend

(TRENTON) – Legislation Assemblymen Matt Milam, Nelson Albano and John F. McKeon sponsored to toughen the financial penalties against illegal ocean dumping today passed the Assembly.

The measure was crafted after several South Jersey beaches were forced to close around Labor Day weekend after illegally dumped medical waste washed ashore. As many as 225 syringes and other medical waste were found in Avalon – leading borough officials to close beaches four times. Syringes also washed ashore in Berkeley, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Brigantine and Upper Township.

Bill Package Would Ensure State is Prepared if Disaster Strikes

(TRENTON) – Sweeping legislation Assemblymen Nelson T. Albano and Matthew W. Milam sponsored to improve evacuation plans throughout the state in preparation for a catastrophic event or natural disaster, such as a hurricane or nor’easter, was released today by an Assembly committee.

“We can’t afford to wait until after a disaster strikes to improve our preparedness,” Albano said.

The measure (A-3786) stems from the final report of the Assembly Coastal New Jersey Evacuation Task Force that was submitted last May.

“While our emergency management officials have done a great job, the state can do more to ensure residents have the tools, services and information they need to be protected if and when disaster strikes,” Milam said.
