(OCEAN CITY, September 11) – First Legislative District GOP Assembly nominees Mike Donohue and John McCann today remembered the attacks of 8 years ago, and issued the following statement:

“Eight years ago, our nation suffered attacks at the hands of radicals who sought to destroy us because we love liberty. Though they claimed thousands of innocent lives that day, they did not defeat us – instead, they merely strengthened our resolve and our determination to continue standing firm in defense of freedom, both at home and abroad.

Van Drew on Santorum visit

State Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-Dennis) is not concerned with former Republican Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum’s visit to Cape May County tonight.

“I don’t think those things matter too much, other than raising a bit of money,” he said.

Santorum, a two-term social conservative who lost his seat amid an anti-Republican wave in 2006, will hold a public appearance with Republican Assembly candidates Mike Donohue and John McCann in Cape May Court House, along with some fundraising events.

Van Drew is not on the ballot this year, but his district’s two assemblymen, Matt Milam (D-Vineland) and Nelson Albano (D-Vineland), are considered the state’s two most vulnerable Democratic legislators come November.  As such, Van Drew, who helped his running mates in 2007 with his electoral coattails, is running as if he is up for reelection himself.

Santorum to campaign for District 1 Republicans

Former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Rick Santorum is heading to Cape May County on Tuesday to stump for Republican Assembly candidates Michael Donohue and John McCann.

The candidates struck a socially conservative tone in announcing Santorum’s visit.

“For sixteen years, Rick Santorum was a champion of the conservative cause in the Congress,” said Donohue in a statement. “Whether the issue was defending traditional marriage, or fighting for tax cuts for middle class families, or working to protect America against the threat of radical Islamic terrorism, Rick Santorum was always on the front lines. We’re thrilled that he’s able to join us next week to help us reach out to more voters in South Jersey.”

A public rally is scheduled for Tuesday at 5:00pm at Cape May County Park in Cape May Court House, as well as several fundraising events.

It's McCann in the 1st

It appears that Ocean City Republican Municipal Chairman John McCann will be the new assembly candidate in the 1st Legislative District.

No one else submitted a letter of intent to the district’s three county chairs by today’s 4:30pm deadline.

McCann replaces Upper Township Committeeman Frank Conrad to run with Mike Donohue, an attorney from Dennis Township, against incumbents Matt Milam (D-Vineland) and Nelson Albano (D-Vineland).

“I look forward to completing the statutory process to confirm John as my running mate.  We have important battles to fight on behalf of the people of South Jersey who yesterday got hit with yet another Corzine budget that raises their taxes and reduces their chances for prosperity,” said Donohue, who endorsed McCann soon after Conrad dropped out.

GOP seeks replacement candidate in 1st district

Republican Frank Conrad has dropped his bid for State Assembly in the 1st district. His running mate, Michael Donohue (above) is backing John McCann for the GOP nod to replace Conrad.

The three Republican chairmen from the counties that make up the 1st Legislative District will hold a conference call this afternoon to figure out the process to replace former Assembly candidate Frank Conrad.

Citing business obligations, Conrad dropped his candidacy over the weekend.  Ocean City GOP Municipal Chairman John McCann immediately made a play to fill his spot, getting the endorsement of running mate Mike Donohue.  He's also been endorsed by party officials from Cumberland and Atlantic Counties whose towns are in the district.  But McCann isn't a sure thing just yet.

Norris Clark, who ran last year, has expressed interest in running to Cape May County Republicans.  Cumberland County Republican Chairman Bob Greco, however, had not heard from Clark yet.

"I've heard some rumblings about it, but I can't put any substance behind it because I haven't heard from him directly," he said.

Clark could not immediately be reached for comment. Read More >

INSIDE EDGE

GOP candidates drops in District 1

Upper Township Committeeman Frank Conrad has dropped his bid for State Assembly in the first district - where Nelson Albano (D-Vineland) and Matthew Milam (D-Vineland) are considered the most vulnerable incumbents in the Legislature.  Conrad is citing business and person reasons, but sources strongly suggest that a key reason for ending his Assembly bid is that he could not get along with his running mate, Mike Donohue, or his campaign manager, Peg Emberger.

Donahue has endorsed Ocean City GOP Municipal Chairman John McCann, a former Cape May County Board of Realtors president, to replace Conrad on the GOP ticket.  But McCann does not yet have a lock on a special GOP convention that must be held to pick a new candidate.  Norris Clark, who ran with Donohue in 2007, is reportedly considering a run.
