The two Assembly seats had been won by the Republicans in 1985.From the West New York home of a Hudson County legend, Christopher Jackman, Silverio "Sal" Vega will announce his candidacy for State Senator in the 33rd district.  Vega, a freshman Assemblyman and the May of West New York, will be joined by the Hudson County Democratic Organization candidates for State Assembly: former Hoboken Councilwoman (and unsuccessful '05 mayoral candidate) Carol Marsh, and Nicole Harrison Garcia, the wife of indicted former Assemblyman and Union City Mayor Rudy Garcia.

The HCDO is backing Vega over Assemblyman Brian Stack, the Mayor of Union City, for the Senate seat currently held by Bernard Kenny, who is not seeking re-election.

Nicole Harrison Garcia and former Hoboken Councilwoman (and mayoral candidate) Carol Marsh will run for Assembly in the 33rd district on a slate with Senate candidate Sal Vega, an Assemblyman and the Mayor of West New York. One of U.S. Senator Robert Menendez's top staffers, Nicholas Chiaravalloti says he is mulling a bid for State Assembly in the 31st district. The Bayonne Democrat, who serves as Menendez's State Director, says he will decide within the next 24 hours if he will take on former Assemblyman Joseph Chiappone and former State Senator/ex-Acting Jersey City Mayor L. Harvey Smith, who are expected to run on the Hudson County Democratic Organization line with Senate candidate Sandra Bolden Cunningham. Chiarvalloti could wind up on a ticket with Assemblyman Louis Manzo as a candidate for State Senate.

Menendez, Lautenberg wait to endorse

NEWARK - New Jersey’s United States Senators were coy on Monday when about who they would like to see as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2008.

“I’m very happy with my job now,� Sen. Robert Menendez said with a laugh. “Oh, you mean, who do I like among the existing candidates?�

That’s right.

Menendez wouldn’t commit to anyone.

“They’re all incredibly talented,� he said.
