Assembly Republicans tried unsuccessfully to find out about legislative slush fund

Two-and-a-half years before a state budget aide brought back to light a slush fund that gave key legislative leaders sole discretion over millions of dollars in state money, Assembly Republicans were suspicious of the program and sought to learn more about it.

They didn’t get very far, however, according to documents the Assembly Republicans provided to PolitickerNJ.

The Property Tax Assistance and Community Development grants program became the subject of controversy again yesterday when Democratic Senate budget staffer George LeBlanc, testifying at former State Sen. Wayne Bryant’s corruption trial, said that Bryant got $4 million from the fund to distribute at his own discretion. $200,000 went to his employer, UMDNJ. LeBlanc also testified that former Senate Majority Leader Bernard Kenny also was allocated $4 million.

Pennacchio holds the line in Hunterdon

Senate candidate Joe Pennacchio hung on to the Hunterdon County Republicans' line tonight.

Pennacchio kept the prominent ballot spot, winning 34 votes to Zimmer’s 30 at a special county committee meeting.

It was the second time that Pennacchio won a county committee vote in Hunterdon County. In late February, he beat Anne Estabrook and Murray Sabrin to win the coveted ballot spot.

But after Hunterdon native Dick Zimmer entered the race last week, the county’s Republican chairman, Henry Kuhl, scheduled a special county committee meeting to vote on whether to change the county’s ballot placement.

Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce

Release Date: Feb 14 2007

DeCROCE: ALL 31 ASSEMBLY REPUBLICANS AGREE
THE LEGISLATURE SHOULD TURN OVER ALL DOCUMENTS
REQUESTED BY THE U.S. ATTORNEY IMMEDIATELY

In a letter faxed to U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie this morning, Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce said all 31 members of the Assembly Republican caucus oppose the decision made by the Office of Legislative Services and ruling Democrats to refuse to comply with a federal subpoena seeking documents pertinent to a reportedly wide-ranging political corruption probe.

"After checking with every member of my caucus, I want the U.S. Attorney to know Assembly Republicans are united in the belief that the decision by the Office of Legislative Services to retain special counsel and challenge the federal subpoena in court is a colossal mistake," said DeCroce, R-Morris and Passaic. "It was done without our knowledge or support.

"It is important for Chris Christie and the public at large to know that when Edward Dauber, the special counsel retained by the Office of Legislative Services, appears before U.S. District Court Judge Mary Cooper to fight the subpoena he is not speaking on behalf of the entire Legislature by a long shot. He is certainly not speaking for my members."
