DeCROCE WARNS DEP COMMISSIONER NOT TO SHIFT FROM PAY-AS-YOU-GO TO BORROWING FOR PARKLAND

DeCROCE WARNS DEP COMMISSIONER NOT TO SHIFT FROM PAY-AS-YOU-GO TO BORROWING FOR PARKLAND

PROPOSAL TO USE CBT TAX REVENUE FOR BONDS ON TOP OF CORZINE’S $38 BILLION BORROWING SCHEME OUTRAGEOUS

Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce sharply criticized a proposal floated by state Environmental Protection Commissioner Lisa Jackson at a Senate committee hearing today to use constitutionally dedicated corporate business tax (CBT) revenue now used for parkland development on a pay-as-you-go basis to back bonds instead.

“If this was a trial balloon by the commissioner, the administration should stick a pin in it immediately,” said DeCroce, R-Morris and Passaic. “Is there no end to the credit card mentality of the Corzine administration?

“How can they have the audacity to suggest even more bonding and more state debt at the same time the governor is pushing his 800 percent toll hike and nearly $40 billion bonding scheme? To talk about even more new debt now is madness.”

At energy policy meeting, Rose fights with cabinet and walks away

One of Governor Jon Corzine’s goals for 2008 is a new state energy plan – that’s one of the reasons he opted to attend a global warming conference in Portugal the week before the November mid-term elections.  So far, the odds of Corzine achieving a successful energy plan appear slim – because of infighting within his administration.

A meeting of key administration officials last week did not go especially well: Corzine policy advisor Gary Rose wound up having quite a fight with two cabinet members – Environmental Protection Commissioner Lisa Jackson and Board of Public Utilities President Jeanne Fox.  The hot-headed Rose, a my way or the highway kind of guy who came from Goldman Sachs, wound up screaming at the cabinet members before he stormed out of the room.

Torch's candidate for the DEP

Democratic sources say that Lisa Jackson, now the Assistant Commissioner of Compliance and Enforcement, has emerged as a top candidate for Commissioner of Environmental Protection in Jon Corzine's administration. Jackson worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 1987 to 2001, serving as Acting Director of Enforcement in the New York regional office run by state Board of Public Utilities Chairman Jeanne Fox. Jackson has an influential backer: former U.S. Senator Bob Torricelli. This could help Torricelli, who is seeking DEP permits for his client, Matrix Developments. The current Commissioner, Bradley Campbell, may want to stay on -- although it won't necessarily be his choice.
