Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Union), 56, is a graduate of American University.  She served as Mayor of Fanwood and as a Union County Freeholder before winning a State Assembly seat in 2001.  Stender came within 1% of unseating GOP Congressman Mike Ferguson in 2006, and is a candidate for Congress in 2008.

Corzine's waiting game

There are rumblings within the Democratic Party that Jon Corzine is bungling the selection of his successor to the United States Senate, the first major decision of the governor-elect's tenure. Democrats in Washington and in Trenton are complaining that by waiting more than a month after his election to name his successor, Corzine allowed presumptive Republican Senate nominee Tom Kean, Jr. to have a free pass at his press conference with NRSC Chair Elizabeth Dole this week -- something the Republicans did not give Corzine at his own gubernatorial announcement one year ago. Democrats are grumbling that by dragging out the announcement of his successor, Corzine is preventing the party from setting up a political operation that would have already challenged Kean on many of his positions and that by dithering on an announcement, Corzine is continuing to give Kean a free pass in the media while preventing an incumbent Democratic senator from gaining traction and seniority both in New Jersey and in Washington.
