The GAVI Fund is the financing arm of the GAVI Alliance, which is working to increase children’s access to life-saving vaccines in the world’s poorest 75 countries.

Maguire, 68, worked for the U.S. Department of State and ran an urban development program in New York City before winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1974 -- he defeated eleven-term GOP Congressman William Widnall, the Ranking Republican on the House Banking Committee.

Menendez, Lautenberg wait to endorse

NEWARK - New Jersey’s United States Senators were coy on Monday when about who they would like to see as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2008.

“I’m very happy with my job now,� Sen. Robert Menendez said with a laugh. “Oh, you mean, who do I like among the existing candidates?�

That’s right.

Menendez wouldn’t commit to anyone.

“They’re all incredibly talented,� he said.

Bad chemistry: Lautenberg grills homeland security rep on proposed chemical plant regulations

Sen. Frank Lautenberg slammed the Bush Administration on Monday for what he described as an administration effort to weaken state homeland security regulations governing chemical plants, by essentially allowing chemical companies to override strict New Jersey regs.

At a public hearing he chaired in Newark, Lautenberg repeatedly asked Lawrence Stanton, a spokesman for the federal Department of Homeland Security, why the administration’s new homeland security proposals preempt state laws – notably the state’s 1984 Toxic Catastrophe Prevention Act - with federal guidelines that weaken regulations and make chemical plants less safe.

Lautenberg announces new staffers

Scott MulhauserScott MulhauserSome changes in U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg's office: Scott Mullhauser, who worked for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and former U.S. Senator Robert Torricelli, will become Senior Advisor and Counsel to Lautenberg and direct his communications office; and Michael Pagan, a former Herald News reporter who worked for Assembly Speakers Albio Sires and Joseph Roberts, will be the new Press Secretary. They replace Alex Formuzis, who has joined The Environmental Working Group.

Pagan played on the championship Assembly Democratic softball team, making the struggling Senate Democratic team a winner in Pagan's decision to work for the state's senior Senator.
