Donovan Challenges Opponents to Repudiate Payroll Abuses Championed by Talarico

Bergen County and New Jersey can no longer afford part time political appointees receiving full time benefits, according to Kathleen Donovan candidate for Bergen County Executive. She said that she and her running mates "will lead by example and institute a series of significant reforms to curb pension and benefit abuses while protecting hard working public employees who provide meaningful services that benefit residents and taxpayers."

Re: Whitman protegee Kathe Donovan's liberal record

Dear Fellow Republican,

There are many reasons we belong to the Republican Party. One of the most significant is the shared belief that taxes are too high. Sadly, Whitman protegee Kathe Donovan doesn't think so. Through the course of 20 years in politics and over a dozen campaigns for public office, Ms. Donovan has compiled a record of supporting higher taxes, in addition to other liberal positions that we'll touch on later.

Any Republican interested in lower taxes should know that during her two decades in politics Donovan has supported:

Higher income taxes
Increased gas taxes
Increased corporate taxes
Increased fees on air travel

Caliguire calls for a moratorium on large scale EnCap-style developments

Moratorium would cover similar large-scale developments in Bergen County
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: DANIEL MILLER // 201-394-7641

HACKENSACK - Bergen County Republican Organization endorsed candidate for County Executive, Todd Caliguire, has called for a moratorium on large-scale development throughout Bergen County, such as the EnCap project, and called on his two liberal opponents - Kathe Donovan and Dennis McNerney to join him.

"The EnCap project will increase local property taxes, increase traffic congestion, mandates low income housing units and now will require eminent domain abuse to accomplish its goals. This project needs to be halted," said Caliguire.

"It is clear that public officials who have supported EnCap have failed to take account of the true costs to the local communities. Therefore, I believe that intensive state, county and local reviews, with local input should occur before any further action takes place on this project."

The EnCap project, along with other development proposals in the Meadowlands region were initially sold as a panacea for old-growth, suburban South Bergen towns seeking to improve their communities and boost their ratables. However, the size and scope of the EnCap project has changed several times; most notably, high density housing units have been added to initial plans.

"This project is out of control. What was supposed to improve communities in South Bergen has morphed into something that is threatening to ruin them. It is clear that better oversight is required," Caliguire continued.

"I also believe each community in Bergen County should hold a referendum on large scale projects, particularly those requiring the use of eminent domain. The combination of over development and government taking of private property simply to pursue additional tax ratables is very dangerous to property owners. It is not just unfair, it is un-American and needs to stop," added Caliguire.

"While I am calling on my two opponents to join me, I doubt they will do so. Dennis McNerney and the Bergen Democratic Organization's pay-to-play operation is funded in no small part by these developers, while Kathe Donovan's chief political backer, Alan Marcus has long represented clients seeking to develop the Meadowlands. Neither one offers much hope to homeowners seeking relief from these abusive practices," stated Caliguire.

Conservative Former Acting GOP Chair Endorses Donovan Team

President Ronald Reagan's legacy was Republican unity.
Let's remember that.

As a life long conservative I was outraged to read the recent letter “Returning to Reagan, the Caliguire Ticket, by BCRO Chairman Guy Talarico. Talarico desperately exploits President Reagan’s name as he attempt to scare Republicans into thinking this is a Conservative vs. Liberal countywide race. This divisive approach is a slap in the face to all Republicans who hold true the memory and legacy of one of the greatest presidents to hold office -- Ronald Reagan.

Most Americans have their own special memories of Ronald Reagan. His class, strength and stoic leadership in good times and bad made so many of us feel like we were all one, all Americans. I often recall his inspiring quote “I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.

To use Ronald Reagan’s name to divide Republicans clearly violates President Reagan’s basic principles as he always appealed to our best hopes, not our worst fears and our confidence rather than our doubts.

The upcoming primary in June is about change and moving the Republican Party in the right direction. We can no longer continue to lose to the Bergen County Democrat machine. We have had great candidates and ideas but for the past few years we have failed the voters of this county by not providing our county and local Republican candidates with the necessary financing and organization to get our message out.

This year that can change. The Donovan ticket -- proven winners -- will return Bergen County to the “days of -- lower taxes and a smaller government that will promote prosperity and opportunity for all. The last time the Republicans won in Bergen County was when Kathe Donovan and Lisa Randall headed the ticket!

This letter is in no way intended as a personal attack on Chairman Talarico. I know him and I know that his intentions were sincere in the past. But sincerity did not win elections.

I do agree with Chairman Talarico on one point: “We Republicans must give the voters the option to vote for genuine change in Bergen County for Victory in 2006. He’s right, but that change is a change in the status quo. We must all join forces and support the Donovan ticket in June; it’s our only hope for a bright dawn ahead in Bergen County.

Sincerely I remain,

Rita Kirk

Congressman Scott Garrett Announces Mobile Constituent Service Hours in Ringwood

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Scott Garrett and his constituent services staff will be available to talk to residents one-on-one at Ringwood Borough Hall, 60 Margaret King Avenue from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 3rd.

“While I have district offices in Paramus and Newton, it is not always easy for you to make your way out to one of them, and for this reason, my staff is coming to you, said Garrett (R-Sussex). “In other towns, constituents have found these meetings a helpful resource, where my staff and I can assist them in working through their problems with Medicare, Social Security, veterans’ benefits, and other Federal programs.

Congressman Garrett has also invited ATSDR officials to join him at this event, to meet with residents to discuss the Superfund-related health assessment the agency is close to completing. “The Superfund site has been at the forefront of all of our minds and I will continue to work tirelessly until the site is completely and finally cleaned. At each month’s Mobile Service Hours, I will invite a different agency to address these specific concerns, Garrett further stated.

The purpose of the Mobile Constituent Service Hours is to meet with citizens and help them with difficulties they may be having with Federal agencies and programsand for Ringwood, to especially address any concerns related to the Superfund site.

Congressman Garrett’s staff is trained to act as liaisons with the Federal government for Fifth District residents. They will be at the Borough Hall on the first Monday of each month, barring last minute scheduling difficulties. Residents are encouraged to attend and to bring any paperwork that might be helpful to the staff in understanding their specific cases.

Congressman Garrett has set up Mobile Constituent Service Hours in 27 municipalities throughout the District, and he continues to add locations to the schedule. The full schedule can be found at www.house.gov/garrett.

The Donovan Team Announces More Endorsements

For Immediate release:

SUPPORT FOR DONOVAN TICKET GROWS
PARTY LEADERS, LOCAL OFFICIALS JOIN BANDWAGON

Scores of Bergen County Republican elected and party officials have endorsed the ticket headed by Kathleeen "Kathe" Donovan and Freeholder Elizabeth "Lisa" Randall. The endorsements follow earlier endorsements from 11 Bergen County Republican mayors.

The endorsements come in the wake of a chaotic Republican County Committee meeting which was marked by Chairman Guy Talarico's refusal to allow the County Committee and Republican elected officials to participate in an "open" convention. Talarico ignored State Senator Gerry Cardinale and hundreds of Committee members and elected officials who pressed for an open convention. Instead, Talarico "ruled" that his hand picked candidate would get the "party" backing.

In his haste to slam the door on Republicans who clamored for an open convention, Talarico failed to advise the assembled that two of the candidates endorsed by the Bergen County Republican Policy Committee, Lisa Randall and Jae Kim, have decided to run on the ticket headed by Donovan.

Mayor Michael Kaplan of Norwood, a spokesperson for the Donovan slate, said that the latest endorsements "are a repudiation of the tactics which denied County Committee members and elected officials their right to have a say in picking our party's ticket."

He continued, "Republican party leaders and local officials urged Kathe Donovan to run. They called. She answered their call. Lisa Randall, Ed Trawinski and Jae Kim responded as well. They have formed a ticket that every Republican can be proud of and support enthusiastically. It's a winning ticket that will not only restore Republican government to the county but help elect Republican candidates in each and every municipality."
