(TRENTON) - The Assembly today passed legislation Assemblymen Joseph Vas, Upendra Chivukula and Jeff Van Drew sponsored to protect enlisted military personal from losing employment when called active military duty during a time of war or domestic emergency.

PROTECTION BILL RELEASED BY SENATE PANEL

(TRENTON) - A Senate committee today released legislation Assemblymen Joseph Vas, Upendra Chivukula and Jeff Van Drew sponsored to protect enlisted military personal from losing employment when called to serve in the military during a time of war or domestic emergency.

When New Jersey picked up a fifteenth congressional seat after the 1960 census, the new district included nearly all of Middlesex County.  That was at the insistence of David Wilentz, a former state Attorney General who dominated Middlesex County politics as the Democratic boss from the 1930’s into the 1970’s.  One rare rebel who dared to challenge Wilentz’s wishes was George Otlowski, a Middlesex County Freeholder from Perth Amboy – the center of the Wilentz power base. 

Services for Jose Vas, the father of Assemblyman and Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas, will be held at 10AM on Thursday at the Holy Spirit Church in Perth Amboy. A viewing will be held at the church from 3PM to 8PM today.  Vas died on Sunday at the age of 84.

Paul (Daniels) Danielczyk lost to five-term Rep. Bernard Dwyer by just 5,598 votes, 51%-46%.Few pundits give Republican Paul (Daniels) Danielczyk much of a chance in his campaign for a State Assembly seat in the heavily Democratic 19th district against incumbents John Wisniewski and Joseph Vas. That must be frustrating for Danielczyk, who would have been a Congressman if his own party had given him even a tiny bit of support.

Back in 1990, newly-elected Governor Jim Florio raised taxes by $2.8 billion, and neither party anticipated that voters would take out their frustration with Florio on Democratic candidates for Congress. Bill Bradley, the popular two-term Democratic U.S. Senator, almost lost his seat to former Public Utilities Commission President Christine Todd Whitman -- the 50%-47% margin was almost entirely a backlash against Florio.

That year, the 37-year-old Danielczyk nearly upset five-term Democratic Congressman Bernard Dwyer. He lost by only 5,598 votes (51%-46%), and spent just $8,887 on his campaign

Republican Assembly candidate Paul “Daniels” Danielczyk today lashed out against his opponent, Joseph Vas, for abstaining from voting on the Dual Office Holding bill.

"By abstaining on the vote, Vas has admitted that a conflict of interest does exist with holding two offices,” said Danielczyk in a press release.
