The Denver adventures of Tom Barrett

Barrett and Kerry synchronize their BlackBerrys.: Politicker photoBarrett and Kerry synchronize their BlackBerrys.: Politicker photo

DENVER - Essex County operative Tom Barrett didn’t really have a horse in the race at this point. But Essex County Freeholder Linda Lordi Cavanaugh and her friends did.

This would be Sen. Hillary Clinton’s (D-NY) "Don’t Cry for me Argentina" moment, and consummate party insider Barrett wanted to make sure the diehard Clinton supporters got there for the coming Clinton catharsis.

He settled up with the waiter at the Palms and high-stepped it for Lawrence Avenue where Cavanaugh and company were already hobbling double-time on high heels on their way out to hail a cab.

As the Clintonistas piled in, Barrett caught sight of Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) emerging from one, and soft-shoeing after a high-class-looking brunette.

Kerry endorses Lautenberg

John Kerry has endorsed Frank Lautenberg for re-election to the United States Senate, praising the New Jersey Senator for being one of just “eleven brave Democrats” who voted to end the Bush Iraq policy at a time when “no one wanted to come within a mile of the legislation” to bring combat troops home.

“The Senate needs progressive warriors like Frank Lautenberg,” said Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee.  “People who show up when it counts and fight 'til the bell rings.” Read More >

Ron Paul's U.S. Senate candidate in '04: “I would not put my head in the oven if John Kerry is elected president"

Ramapo College Professor Murray Sabrin may not be the best messenger for an attack on GOP U.S. Senate candidate Anne Evans Estabrook’s Republican credentials. In a statement released today, Sabrin accused Estabrook of “speaking out of both sides of her checkbook” by making past campaign contributions to Democratic candidates, including Bob Menendez for Congress, John Kerry for President, Linda Stender for State Assembly, and the New Jersey Democratic State Committee.

Corzine did what Kerry, Kennedy couldn't

In case you missed it: Governor Jon Corzine delivered New Jersey to his preferred presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton – something some other major political leaders could not do. Barack Obama had endorsements from the two United States Senators from Massachusetts, Edward Kennedy and John Kerry, but still lost the state to Clinton. And Governor Janet Napolitano could not produce an Obama win in Arizona.

Trivia: Ex-presidential nominees never back their VP candidates for President

John Kerry’s endorsement of Barack Obama – and not John Edwards -- continues a tradition of unsuccessful presidential candidates declining to endorse their Vice Presidential running mate for the presidency: in 2004, Al Gore endorsed Howard Dean, not Joseph Lieberman.

Congrats, Mitt

Congratulations to Mitt Romney, who became the first presidential candidate from Massachusetts to ever lose the New Hampshire primary in a year when an incumbent was not running. Romney breaks the undefeated streak started by Calvin Coolidge in 1924 and continued by John F. Kennedy in 1960, Henry Cabot Lodge in 1964 (as a write-in candidate against Barry Goldwater and Nelson Rockefeller), Michael Dukakis in 1988, Paul Tsongas in 1992, and John Kerry in 2004.  The first Bay Stater to lose New Hampshire was Ted Kennedy, who lost 52%-48% to Jimmy Carter in 1980.
