Giuliani, Clinton have big leads in Feb. '08 N.J. primary

Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani continue to be in a statistical dead heat for New Jersey’s fifteen electoral votes, with Giuliani leading 45%-44%, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released this morning. Clinton and Giuliani continue to hold huge leads in the February 5, 2008 presidential primaries.

On the Democratic side, Clinton leads Barack Obama by a 46%-15% margin, with 11% for Al Gore and 7% for John Edwards. In the GOP primary, Giuliani leads Fred Thompson, 45%-12%, with John McCain at 8% and Mitt Romney at 6%.

Giuliani, Clinton have huge leads in N.J. primaries

Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton continue to hold strong leads among New Jersey primary voters, according to a new Strategic Vision poll released today. New Jersey's presidential primary is scheduled for February 5, 2008.

In the Republican primary, Giuliani leads Fred Thompson by a 51%-12% margin, followed by Mitt Romney at 9% and John McCain at 7%.

Among Democrats, Clinton leads Barack Obama, 49%-22%. John Edwards is at 8%.

The poll gives President George W. Bush an upside-down 20%-68% approval rating.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg would get a significant percentage of New Jersey votes if he ran for President, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll of likely voters.

State Sen. Stephen Sweeney will endorse John Edwards for the Democratic presidential nomination. Sweeney, the most powerful political figure in Southwestern New Jersey, heads a key ironworkers union and is the Senate Labor Committee Chairman. He is also the Gloucester County Freeholder Director.

New Jersey is Giuliani country

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani leads every Democratic presidential candidate in New Jersey, and enjoys a massive lead in New Jersey’s 2008 GOP primary, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Among Democrats, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has a 38%-16% lead over Sen. Barack Obama, with former Sen. John Edwards at 9%. Former Vice President Al Gore, who is not a candidate at this time, gets 12% in a New Jersey Democratic primary.

In general election matchups, Giuliani leads Clinton by nine points (49%-40%), Obama by ten points (48%-38%), and Edwards by seven points (48%-41%).

In New Jersey, big leads for Clinton and Giuliani

Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rudy Giuliani enjoy massive leads among New Jersey primary voters, according to a Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll released today.  Among Democrats, Clinton leads Barack Obama by a 41%-22% margin, with 13% for John Edwards.  Giuliani leads John McCain 49%-19% among GOP primary voters, with Mitt Romney receiving 6%.  

The Democrats have a definite gender gap: women back Clinton over Obama, 50%-16%, but among men, it is a virtual dead heat. Open voters who lean toward one of the major parties have a slight preference for McCain and Edwards.

Edwards raises $100k in N.J.

About 150 people attended a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards in Colts Neck on Monday, raising over $100,000 for the campaign. Former Governor Richard Codey introduced Edwards at a private meeting with Democratic leaders organized by Assemblyman Michael Panter. Nine Democratic County Chairmen attended the session: Ronald Ruff (Atlantic), Rick Perr (Burlington), Jim Beach (Camden), Louis Magazzu (Cumberland), David DelVecchio (Hunterdon), Victor Scudiery (Monmouth), Lewis Candura (Morris), Wyatt Earp (Ocean), and John Currie (Passaic) -- and Middlesex County Vice Chairwoman Helen Gottlieb. Edwards spoke and took questions for about 45 minutes, and organizers said that the Edwards campaign did not ask for endorsements.

Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes, who will be supporting Hillary Clinton, was among the Democrats at the private meeting with Edwards.

Edwards to visit New Jersey

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards will visit New Jersey on February 26 -- the first major Democratic contender to visit New Jersey this year. He will attend a $1,000/$2,300 fundraiser at the Colts Neck home of Rachel and Chris Placitella.

Edwards has also picked up his first major New Jersey endorsement: Assemblyman Michael Panter, a Monmouth County Democrat who is co-hosting the event.

Fomer Democratic State Committee Counsel Stephen Edelstein, and Glenn Bergenfield, a Princeton trial lawyer, has known John and Elizabeth Edwards since law school and is the godfather to their son, will serve on the host committee, along with Gerald Baker, Abbott Brown, Drew Britcher, Donald Caminiti, Peter Chamas, Dennis Drazin, Michael Ferrara, Michael Galpern, Raymond Gill, Jr., Norman Hobbie, Michael Maggiano, Garry Saloman, Bruce Stern, Jay Surgent, Sol Weiss, and Jack Wurgaft.
