Measure Would Ensure Families Are Not Exploited by Unscrupulous Landlord-Sellers

(TRENTON) - Legislation Assemblymen John J. Burzichelli and Gary S. Schaer sponsored to better protect consumers from abusive practices in the unregulated rent-to-own housing market was passed today by the General Assembly by a vote of 79 to 0.

Earlier this week, Assemblyman Paul Moriarty announced that he wouldn’t stand for reelection for his other elected office: mayor of Washington Township (the one in Gloucester County).

The announcement came less than a week after Moriarty’s name surfaced as a potential replacement for first district Rep. Rob Andrews, who’s vacating the seat to take on incumbent Senator Frank Lautenberg in the June primary.

If Rob Andrews runs for the United States Senate, there would be some competition for his safe Democratic congressional seat in the first district.  Possible candidates would include Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney and Assemblyman Louis Greenwald; both expressed interest in the seat in 2006, when Andrews was a candidate for appointment to the Senate seat that went to Robert Menendez.
