Military veterans, families protest Bush visit in Edison

As an electronics technician in World War II, George Hunt of Burlington, 82, coordinated amphibious landings in the Pacific, the kind where the men ran up the beaches under fire and took territory.

"We used to sit in the navigation boat and time it so that all of our landing craft were synchronized when they hit the shore, in the Philippines, New Guinea, you name it, from 1943 until the war ended," said Hunt as he trudged within a column of New Jersey war protestors on King George’s Post Road in Edison Wednesday night.

On the other side of a police line at the New Jersey Expo Center, plain clothes-men eyed the crowd and wrote in notebooks and behind them, the Republican State Committee welcomed President George W. Bush to a fund-raiser for Legislative candidates. Ticket prices ranged from $300 per-person to attend the main reception to $5,000 for a photo-op with the President.

PRESS RELEASE

Democratic Party Chairman Joe Cryan

Trenton - Joe Cryan, Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, issued the following statement on Tuesday in response to Governor Jon Corzine's State of the State address:

"In his signature style, the Governor gave a no-frills address that went to the heart of the most important issues we face in New Jersey. Breaking the template of most State of the State speeches, he devoted less time congratulating himself for prior accomplishments and more time addressing the significant challenges in front of us. The Governor took the long view by speaking more to our future than our past and he took the responsible position of emphasizing genuine, lasting reforms that serve the needs of all the people of New Jersey.
"The Governor's determined focus on property tax relief and property tax reform is well placed. He showed once again that he is not intimidated by tough challenges that have defied remedies of the past and he further defined his leadership skills by interpreting a problem that many see as unsolvable and politically treacherous as a responsibility of public service.
“By rejecting the false promise of gimmicks and one-shot solutions he is making the job more difficult, but he is also making the job more worthy and the eventual solutions more worthwhile. The same can be said of the politics of reform: short-term considerations would tell us to avoid dramatic changes to the status quo. But in the end, good government will become good politics.
"With the effective leadership of Senate President Dick Codey and Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts we have made significant strides, but it is still a work in progress. The Governor's selfless determination will help sustain the momentum that is leading to property tax relief that is real and property tax reform that is lasting. #

DeCROCE TO CRYAN: PICK A DATE
FOR THE ASSEMBLY TO ACT ON REAL ETHICS REFORM

'Republicans will be there ready to vote
for comprehensive reform'

Reacting to Assemblyman Joe Cryan's diatribe regarding the downfall of one New Jersey Democrat official after another over the past few weeks because of charges of corrupt or unethical behavior, Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce challenged the chairman of the New Jersey Democratic Party - the only state party to have its headquarters raided by the FBI - to use his influence to schedule a special session of the Assembly to consider real ethics and campaign finance reform.

State Senator Peter Inverso

Inverso: Laments Administration's Failure to Address Campaign Finance and Ethics Reform

Could Savings of Comprehensive Pay-to-Play Reform
Have Avoided Proposed Sales Tax Increase?

More than six months into his term, the Governor has not fulfilled his campaign vow to reform “pay-to-play laws. Thus far, Governor Corzine has not introduced an Administration bill which would strengthen or further tighten ethics on the state’s weak campaign contribution laws. And, the Attorney General’s recommendations to allow corrupt elected officials to keep their pensions and the Administration’s secrecy surrounding the Treasury Audit of the Board of Public Utilities raises concern that ethics reforms may be back sliding.
