PoliticsNJ.com reported in July that Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman John Adler met with staff at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Washington last month to discuss a possible run for Congress next year against incumbent James Saxton.  In what might be the opening salvo of that campaign, the Courier-Post ran Adler's Letter to the Editor criticizing Saxton's record on the Iraq War:

Congressional cash on hand rundown

Many New Jersey Congressmen have fat bank accounts. Leading the pack are three Democrats, none of whom are likely to face competitive races in 2008, but all of whom are considered possible successors if Frank Lautenberg unexpectedly retires. The richest Republican is Frank LoBiondo, whose Second District seat is being eyed as a potential pickup by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Thirteenth District Democrat Albio Sires sits at the bottom of the list. He may face a primary challenge, possibly by Jersey City Councilman Steve Fulop.

Big race in Evesham tomorrow

Democrats are depicting Evesham’s municipal races tomorrow as a Little Bighorn scenario in which the Republican Party has fallen back and circled the wagons around Burlington County’s power center, where the GOP has traditionally maintained control.

The Democrats believe they can ride in tomorrow with 40 people working the phones and over 100 campaign workers on the ground going door-to-door, and sweep former Philadelphia Eagles kicking coach Randy Brown to victory over long-serving incumbent Mayor Gus Tamburro. They say they’re primed to win in this suburban community of 42,275, where last year Sen. Robert Menendez scratched out a win.

Trenton Times, Trentonian on the Same Page- Both Endorse Rep. Jim Saxton

TRENTON, N.J. – Nov. 1 - The State capitol’s major newspapers today endorsed Congressman Jim Saxton.

“In the Third Congressional District, Jim Saxton, Republican, merits reelection the Trentonian wrote. “His low key style of working for real solutions and avoiding bipartisan rancor, of leaving the grandstanding to others have served the district and the country well. He was one of the first in Congress, before 9/11, to grasp the emerging threat of terrorism. His congressional seniority is a valuable asset to the state.

The Times of Trenton praised Jim’s middle-of-the-road record, noting that his seniority has helped him serve South Jersey:

“If there’s anyone who fits the definition of a centrist in the House of Representatives these days, it’s Rep. Jim Saxton, the Times wrote. “The Burlington County Republican, has a strong environmental record. He drives a hybrid. He remains a strong but realistic voice on the military base realignment issue. And he’s rightly credited with changing and improving the mission of the three military bases important in the area: McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix and the Lakehurst Naval Station.
