CONNERS AND CONAWAY: MAINTAIN PROPERTY TAX BENEFIT FOR DISABLED VETERANS & ALLEVIATE COSTS FOR MUNICIPALITIES AND PROPERTY TAXPAYERS

(DELRAN) - Assemblymen Jack Conners and Herb Conaway, MD (both D- Burlington/Camden) announced today they would introduce legislation to reimburse towns for costs absorbed by the property tax exemption for disabled veterans.

Under state law, veterans who have been honorably discharged and deemed 100 percent service-related permanently disabled are exempt from paying property taxes. Municipalities absorb the cost of this benefit, increasing the property tax levy for other homeowners and possibly affecting local services.

The global economic crisis thing

Two weeks ago, Republican gubernatorial candidate Christopher Christie predicted that Governor Jon Corzine would blame New Jersey’s economic woes on the global economic crisis.  "The governor's going to say, 'It's not my fault, it's not my fault, it's the global economic crisis's fault,” the former U.S. Attorney said.

Christie was close.  Corzine never called the crisis global; in his budget address he mentioned the “national economic crisis.”

But the “global economic crisis” catch phrase is already getting plenty of play.  One press release put out by the Assembly Democratic office last week used the words “global economic crisis “five times.  Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing), in a statement issued yesterday, said: “The Governor should be commended for proposing a bold plan to help stave off this global economic crisis.”  Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts (D-Camden), Assemblyman Jack Conners (D-Pennsauken), and State Treasurer David Rousseau all used the “global economic crisis” terminology.

DIEGNAN/BARNES/CONNERS/RAMOS BILL CREATING ‘TROOPS TO COLLEGE’ PROGRAM PASSES ASSEMBLY

Aims to Help Veterans Make Transition into Classroom

(TRENTON) – Legislation sponsored by Assemblymen Patrick J. Diegnan Jr., Peter J. Barnes III, Jack Conners and Ruben J. Ramos Jr. to help veterans make the transition from the battlefield to the college classroom was passed today by the General Assembly.

The bill (A-3360) would require the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education, in consultation with the Department of Veterans’ and Military Affairs, to establish the Troops to College Program. The program would assist New Jersey’s public institutions of higher education in coordinating a comprehensive array of services to help veterans make the transition into the college classroom.

“Our veterans deserve the best, and that includes access to higher education,” said Diegnan (D-Middlesex). “This plan would make that transition easier and is the right thing to do for those who have sacrificed their time and energy to defend our nation.”
