BILL CREATING ‘TROOPS TO COLLEGE’ PROGRAM GETS FINAL LEGISLATIVE APPROVAL

(TRENTON) – Legislation sponsored by Assemblymen Patrick J. Diegnan Jr., Peter J. Barnes III, Jack Conners and Ruben J. Ramos Jr. to help veterans make the transition from the battlefield to the college classroom has received final legislative approval.

The bill (A-3360) would require the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education, in consultation with the Department of Veterans’ and Military Affairs, to establish the Troops to College Program. The program would assist New Jersey’s public institutions of higher education in coordinating a comprehensive array of services to help veterans make the transition into the college classroom.

“Our veterans deserve the best, and that includes access to higher education,” said Diegnan (D-Middlesex). “This plan would make that transition easier and is the right thing to do for those who have sacrificed their time and energy to defend our nation.”

CONNERS & JOHNSON SEEK TO HELP MILITARY FAMILIES IN NEED

(TRENTON) – Legislation sponsored by Assemblymen Jack Conners and Gordon Johnson to allow taxpayers to voluntarily contribute money to help New Jersey military personnel and families in need of assistance is advancing.

The bill would allow voluntary contributions on gross income tax returns to charitable organizations that support active duty members of the New Jersey National Guard and Reserve and their families.

“Far too often the families of the brave men and women sacrificing to defend this country suffer financial and other difficulties because a provider is off on active duty,” said Conners (D-Burlington/Camden), chairman of the Assembly Military and Veterans Affairs Committee that recently released the bill. “This would be a voluntary and simple way to help those families in need. It’s the least we can do to lend a helping hand to those defending our freedom.”

ASSEMBLY DEMOCRATS ON BILL TO INCREASE PUBLIC INPUT ON HEALTH INSURER CONVERSIONS

(TRENTON) - Assembly members Gary S. Schaer, John F. McKeon, John S. Wisniewski, L. Grace Spencer and Jack Conners - the Democratic members of the Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee - today issued a multimedia package on legislation that would require increased public participation and independent analysis of any health insurer wishing to convert to a for-profit company.

The measure (A-3729) would provide more transparency in any potential conversion of a health insurer to a for-profit company by requiring the state to complete an independent health impact study, analyzing the impact of the conversion on the health status of New Jersey residents, increasing the number of public hearings to at least three and granting the Office of the Public Advocate access to all the material included in the conversion process.
