Bergen set to go with Oliver; Schaer backs Oliver

Four Bergen County Democrats -- Valerie Huttle (D-Englewood), Gordon Johnson (D-Englewood), Joan Voss (D-Fort Lee), and Connie Wagner (D-Paramus) -- are expected to endorse Sheila Oliver (D-East Orange) for Assembly Speaker today.  Gary Schaer (D-Passaic) also says he's voting for Oliver.  That would bring her hard count to 39.

Five incumbents seeking re-election have not yet disclosed their choice in the race for Speaker: Gary Schaer (D-Passaic), Elease Evans (D-Paterson), Nellie Pou (D-Paterson), Joan Quigley (D-Jersey City), Vincent Prieto (D-Secaucus), and Wayne DeAngelo (D-Hamilon).  A seventh incumbent, Anthony Chiappone (D-Bayonne), who is under indictment, has been tossed from the Democratic Caucus.

Assembly Democrats News Release

GREENSTEIN / VAINIERI HUTTLE / JOHNSON BILL MAKING COUNTY POLITICAL PARTIES MORE TRANSPARENT NOW LAW

(TRENTON) – Legislation sponsored by Assembly members Linda R. Greenstein, Valerie Vainieri Huttle and Gordon Johnson to make county political parties more transparent was signed into law Thursday by Gov. Jon S. Corzine.

The law (A-1904) requires county political party committees to adopt and distribute a constitution and bylaws that ensures the representative rights of county committee members in the governance of the county party.

“This is a crucial step toward more accountability and transparency at every government level,” said Greenstein (D-Middlesex/Mercer). “It’s long overdue and a welcome addition to making government more open and accountable to the people.”

NEW LAW SPONSORED BY ASSEMBLYMAN JOHNSON DECLARES TODAY ‘FIREFIGHTER RECOGNITION DAY’

(ENGLEWOOD) – Legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Gordon Johnson declaring today annually as “Firefighter Recognition Day” is now law.

The bill (AJR-52) signed Thursday by Gov. Jon S. Corzine designates Oct. 2 of each year as "Firefighter Recognition Day" in appreciation of the dedicated service the members of the fire departments in New Jersey have rendered to their fellow citizens.

“Our brave men and women firefighters heroically protect us day in and day out despite the clear dangers to their own lives,” said Johnson (D-Bergen). “Permanently designating a day each year to honor and appreciate their sacrifices and efforts is the least we can do.”

JOHNSON BILL WOULD SUPPORT GROUPS THAT PROVIDE YOUTH WITH POSITIVE ACTIVITIES

Assembly Democrats News Release

JOHNSON BILL WOULD SUPPORT GROUPS THAT PROVIDE YOUTH WITH POSITIVE ACTIVITIES

(ENGLEWOOD) – Assemblyman Gordon Johnson today announced he’s introduced legislation to support religious and charitable organizations that provide constructive activities to children.

The bill (A-4074) would waive the additional fees the holder of a commercial driver’s license must pay when obtaining a license to operate a vehicle owned or leased by a charitable organization and is used to transport children to or from after-school activities.

“This simple step could go a long way toward helping the charitable organizations that work so hard within our communities to provide constructive activities for children,” said Johnson (D-Bergen). “These groups provide a valuable service and help steer youth in the right direction. We should always look to make it easier for them to do their fine work that brings so much benefit.”
