Frelinghuysen, New Jersey's oldest living Congresman, turns 92 today

Frelinghuysen, who represented New Jersey in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1953 to 1975, celebrates his 92nd birthday today. He is New Jersey’s oldest living former Congressman, and the tenth oldest in the nation. He is one of just ten living members of the House freshman Class of 1952 – which included current U.S. Senator Robert Byrd; there is no living Member of Congress whose service predates Frelinghuysen’s.

Slow, slow news day

The death of Gerald Ford came three days after Robert Stafford passed away. Stafford's tenure as a United States Senator from Vermont was concurrent with Ford's presidency. The last time that happened was in January 1933, when the deaths of Calvin Coolidge and Guy Goff came two days apart. A West Virginia Republican, Goff was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1924, running on Coolidge's ticket.

Another Jerry Ford trivia item

The last time a New Jerseyan was within three heartbeats of the Presidency was from August 9 to December 19, 1974, when William E. Simon was the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. When Richard Nixon resigned and Gerald Ford became President, next in line were Carl Albert, the Speaker of the House, and Senate President Pro-Tempore James Eastland. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was not in the line of succession since he was a naturalized citizen. That put the Paterson-born Simon, who ran a Wall Street investment banking firm before joining the Nixon administration, third in the line for the Presidency.
