SENATOR MENENDEZ ANNOUNCES $705,122 IN ASSISTANCE FOR NEW JERSEY FIREFIGHTERS

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Menendez announced that the Department of Homeland Security has awarded $705,122 in competitive grants to three New Jersey fire departments. Awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and administered in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration, these grants will be used by the departments to enhance their capacity to protect the public and first responders from fire related hazards and support their emergency response needs. These funds are part of round 42 of the competitive FY 2008 Fire Grant announcements.

GIRGENTI BILL TO REQUIRE MEDICAL CLEARANCE FOR VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS APPROVED

TRENTON � A bill sponsored by Senator John A. Girgenti, D-Passaic and Bergen, to allow local volunteer firefighting companies or municipalities to require volunteer firefighters to supply a physician�s certificate as a condition of serving was approved 5-0 today by the Senate Law and Public Safety and Veterans� Affairs Committee.

The impetus for the bill was the case of a 92-year-old man who suffered a fractured hip while working as a volunteer firefighter. A state appeals court ruled the fire company was liable for $100,000 because of the man�s injuries.

SENATOR GIRGENTI’S CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK BILL RECEIVES FINAL LEGISLATIVE APPROVAL

TRENTON – A bill to required paid firefighters working in a fire district to undergo a criminal history background check, sponsored by Senator John Girgenti, was approved 78-0 yesterday by the General Assembly.

“Under current law, an applicant for a paid firefighter position in a county or municipality must submit to a criminal history background check,” said Girgenti, D-Passaic and Bergen. “My bill would extend that requirement to firefighters who are employed in fire districts.”
