(TRENTON) - The Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee today released legislation Assemblywomen Sandi Love, Pamela R. Lampitt, Connie Wagner and Elease Evans sponsored to regulate how credit card companies solicit new customers on college campuses in New Jersey.

Measures Would Help To Stabilize Financial Health of State's Hospitals

(TRENTON) - The Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee today released a multi-bill legislative package aimed at stabilizing the long-term financial health of the state's hospital industry to stave-off future hospital closings.

The measures are sponsored by Assembly members Herb Conaway, MD, Ralph R. Caputo, Albert Coutinho, Jerry Green, Linda Greenstein, Gary Schaer, Grace Spencer, Connie Wagner, and Bonnie Watson Coleman.

MILAM/ALBANO/WAGNER BILL INCREASING PENALTIES FOR ILLEGALLY PASSING A SCHOOL BUS ADVANCES

(TRENTON) - Legislation Assembly members Matthew W. Milam, Nelson T. Albano and Connie Wagner sponsored to substantially increase the penalties for illegally passing a school bus dropping off or picking up children was released today by an Assembly committee.

Endorsements of Dennis Shulman’s campaign for Congress by Assemblywoman Connie Wagner and Freeholder James Carroll  is a signal that the blind Rabbi/psychologist is headed toward an endorsement by the Bergen County Democratic Organization.  Wagner and Carroll are close to the party leadership and are not likely to go off on their own to endorse a candidate in the fifth district race.  Shulman has raised nearly $200,000 for his challenge to three-term incumbent Scott Garrett.

The Bergen County Democratic Organization will hold a convention on February 28th to choose the candidate who will occupy the county line in the district, the biggest chunk of which is in Bergen County – especially amongst Democratic primary voters.

Shulman has the support of New Milford Mayor Frank DeBari and Alpine Mayor Paul Tomasko, as well as several municipal chairs and former 39thdistrict legislative candidates Joe Ariyan, Esther Fletcher and Carl Manna. Abate recently announced the support of Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale and several local union officials.

Rev. Vernon Walton could become Bergen's first African American FreeholderBergen County Democratic Chairman Joe Ferriero endorsed Rev. Vernon Walton, a former Englewood councilman, for freeholder today, lining him up to be Bergen County’s first African-American freeholder.

The endorsement, given today at the Bergen County Democratic headquarters in Hackensack, was also attended by Assemblyman Gordon Johnson, a Ferriero foe and former Walton rival who pledged his support to the freeholder-in-waiting.

Ferriero’s endorsement all but ensures that the county committee will confirm Walton to serve the remainder of the unexpired term for the seat left vacant by Connie Wagner, who just entered the Assembly.

The Record has endorsed the Democratic ticket in the 38th district: Robert Gordon for State Senate and Joan Voss and Connie Wagner for State Assembly.  MORE

Once viewed as among the state's most politically regions in New Jersey, the 38th has become a "blue district" and Republicans will not even compete there this fall.  Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce has told Bergen County Republicans that his leadership PAC will not play in the 38th, where incumbent Joan Voss and Freeholder Connie Wagner face Republicans John Driscoll and Renee Czaplicki. 

In case you missed it: New Jersey's three newest Assembly candidates were effectively annointed by individual party leaders, unencumbered by the need to present themselves to voters -- in this case, elected members of the County Committee.  Elease Evans, a Passaic County Freeholder who was elected to fill Alfred Steele's unexpired term, was picked by County Chairman John Currie; Bergen County Freeholder Connie Wagner, who will be the Democratic candidate for Assemblywoman in the 38th district (replacing Bob Gordon, who is running for Joseph Coniglio's Senate seat) was selected by County Chairman Joseph Ferriero; and Mila Jasey, a South Orange Board of Education member, was handpicked by Senate President Richard Codey to replace Mims Hackett in the Legislature.
