Measure is Designed to Remove Politics from Prosecution

 

            TRENTON – Senate President Richard J. Codey (D-Essex) announced today that he will introduce a bill that would bar the state attorney general and county prosecutors from running for elected office in New Jersey for two years after leaving their position. 

           “This measure would ensure that those in a position of considerable power do not abuse that power to further their political goals,” said Sen. Codey.  “I think it’s a much needed step to ensure the integrity of our justice system.”

CODEY, RUIZ BILL TIGHTENING REGULATIONS ON TEEN DRIVERS SIGNED INTO LAW TODAY

           TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senate President Richard J. Codey and Senator Teresa Ruiz was signed into law by Governor Jon Corzine today, providing greater protections for teen drivers by tightening restrictions on the number of people permitted in the car and cutting back on the hours that they can be on the road.  Bill S16 is based on recommendations from New Jersey’s Teen Driver Study Commission.

            The membership on each committee will be expanded by two, with one new Democrat and one new Republican appointed for each committee.

Bill Gets Final Legislative Approval, Paving Way for 16-Year Olds to Donate 

            TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senate President Richard J. Codey and Senate Republican Leader Thomas H. Kean, Jr., which would help increase the availability of potential blood donors, was approved today by the full Senate.  Bill S-2513, approved by a vote of 37 to 0, would lower the legal age to donate blood to 16 with parental consent.

Full Senate Approves Bill That Would Ease Restrictions on Endowment Funds Hit By Investment Woes


            TRENTON – The full Senate today approved a bill sponsored by Senate President Richard J. Codey and Senator Teresa Ruiz that would give charitable organizations more discretion to spend and invest endowment funds that have been hit hard by the lagging economy.

            Currently, the governing body of a charitable endowment fund is restricted from spending the principal of the endowment.  Instead, the governing body can only spend any appreciation of the principal that exceeds the “historic dollar value” of the fund at the time of contribution.
