Kelly enters race for Congress

Ocean County Freeholder John KellyOcean County Freeholder John Kelly

Ocean County Freeholder Jack Kelly today officially entered the race for U.S. Congress, and presented himself as a pro-life, tough on terror, fiscal conservative who would serve the entire 3rd district.

A six-term freeholder running in the half of the 3rd district that has never had a congressman, Kelly said the press would continue to depict the GOP primary war he plans to wage against Medford Mayor Chris Myers as a county versus county showdown.

Observations

Just a few end-of-the day observations:

What would Frank Hague have thought of a Mayor of Jersey City (who is also the Hudson County Democratic Chairman) who could not deliver most of the key Hudson party leadership and elected officials to his candidate for President?  And could the gullible Brad Abelow be the only one who believes Bob Menendez is no longer involved in Hudson County politics?

An impressive list of finance committee members, led by Lewis Eisenberg, has raised just $100,000 for Anne Evans Estabrook’s bid for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination; that’s about half what Dennis Shulman, the blind Rabbi/Psychologist, has raised for his fledgling congressional campaign against Scott Garrett.  Luckily for Estabrook, she put $1.6 million of her own money into the race.  Estabrook still won’t say how much she’ll invest to unseat Frank Lautenberg.

Smith has no choice but to back Ocean candidate

Congressman Christopher Smith will endorse Jack Kelly for Congress in the neighboring third district GOP primary, a move that insiders say is bugging his old friend, Jim Saxton.   Smith and Saxton have been allies since 1980, when Smith ousted a 13-term Democratic incumbent in a district that included Saxton’s hometown.  Saxton, an Assemblyman at the time, went to the State Senate in 1981, and after redistricting and the death of longtime GOP Congressman Edwin Forsythe, to Congress in 1984.  Saxton is backing Christopher Myers, the Deputy Mayor of Medford and a Vice President at Lockheed Martin.

Kelly gets Chris Smith's endorsement

Ocean County Freeholder Jack Kelly will officially announce his candidacy tomorrow, but that’s not all – he’ll also tout the support of U.S. Rep. Chris Smith.

Last week, Kelly’s likely primary opponent in Burlington County, Medford Mayor Chris Myers, announced his candidacy alongside Rep. Jim Saxton.

It's been 126 years since Dems won Saxton seat; 54 for Ferguson seat

The two New Jersey House seats most clearly in play next year are the two that have been held by the Republicans for the longest period of time:  Democrats have not won the seat now held by Jim Saxton for 126 years, and Mike Ferguson’s district has not elected a Democrat since 1954.

Republicans: is this it?

You can’t get anyone on the record about it, but some prominent Republicans aren’t exactly happy about their U.S. Senate choices

“Ambivalent is probably the most charitable word you can use for what people say about the choices,” said one Republican elected official who wished to remain anonymous.

Although two factions of the Republican Party are represented in the upcoming U.S. Senate race – Anne Evans Estabrook as the moneyed moderate and Dr. Joseph Pennacchio as the risen-through-the-ranks former Reagan Democrat who will run on the right – some in the party feel that neither has the combination of deep pockets, name recognition and charisma that it will take to beat U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg in 2008.

Multiple Republican sources also say that some county chairs are continuing the search and calling around to find new candidates.

Gilmore prepares for private life, but won't rule out challenge to Smith

Hamilton Mayor Glen Gilmore today said he was disappointed but not shocked by the results of an election he lost earlier this month by 51 to 49%, and wouldn't speculate on the details of a comeback.

Asked about rumors that he would challenge Rep. Christopher Smith in 2008, Gilmore left the door open.

Can Democrats beat Chris Smith in 2008?

YES, the district has become more Democrat-friendly, he supports the war in Iraq, and he has trouble raising money
36%
NO, Smith works hard, his popularity extends beyond the GOP base, and his record in in line with his district
64%

''Quiet, kid,''

These days, Congressman Christopher Smith seems eerily similar to the men he beat in 1980 and 1982.  The point was driven home yesterday by the Merlinoesque comments of Smith’s longtime Chief of Staff, Mary McDermott Noonan.  Asked about Smith’s possible ’08 opponent, a 33-year-old college professor and author with some political credentials and early fundraising success, Noonan said: “We’ve heard this song before.  No matter what the political climate, Chris Smith gets 65% or more,” said Noonan. “He is ballot tested and extremely popular because of the work he’s done for his district.”

Smith undaunted by his 15th opponent

Very quietly, another challenger has emerged with the intention of doing what Democrats have found nearly impossible: ousting 14-term U.S. Rep. Chris Smith.

Josh Zeitz, 33, just got back to his hometown of Bordentown a few months ago from a four year teaching stint at Cambridge University in England. But he has already raised $43,000 under the radar, and hopes to get $100,000 before the year is up.
