Democrats rally for Obama in Roselle

ROSELLE - It’s Garrett Smith country on a Saturday.

Emptying a chair alongside the young Roselle mayor, U.S. Rep. Donald Payne (D-Newark) stood in front of a microphone and gave Gov. Jon Corzine props for playing a role in discovering Sen. Barack Obama (D-Il) when Corzine chaired the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Obama’s romping here in Roselle by every indication, but Payne and Obama aren’t eyeball to eyeball on everything, including last week’s Wall Street bailout.

While Obama and his Republican rival in the presidential race on Wednesday quietly supported the $700 billion measure that its critics say falls disproportionately across the shoulders of American taxpayers, Payne twice vociferously bucked the controversial bill in the House.

Today he laid out his views before a cheering crowd in Roselle’s Warinanco Park, where several hundred people gathered in support of Obama on the front-end of a Union County voter registration drive days before the Oct. 14th registration deadline.

Democratic women target McCain on abortion, children's healthcare and equal pay

State Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen): Politicker file photoState Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen): Politicker file photoDemocratic women legislators today upbraided presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) over his opposition to recent legislation promoting equal pay for women, expansion children’s healthcare; and his stance against Roe vs. Wade.

McCain’s pick of a pro-life vice presidential candidate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, simply concretized the Democrats’ dismay over the prospect of a McCain presidency.

The Statehouse press conference included Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing), and Laurel Brennan, secretary treasurer of the New Jersey AFL-CIO.

"This is not the John McCain of 2000, he is no maverick," said Weinberg, a longtime supporter of Obama’s.

MINNEAPOLIS - Identifying in her hockey mom, small town mayor’s story the features of a universal American life, and exhilarated by her willingness to put her head down and charge after their rivals, members of New Jersey’s GOP delegation praised the acceptance speech delivered tonight by Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, their vice presidential nominee.

"I know my constituents will be able to identify with her, a working mother whose family depends on two incomes," said state Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R-Union).

Since he first declared his hope two or three weeks ago that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) would choose Palin as his running mate as a way of reaching base conservative voters, women, and blue collar America, Kean has consistently emphasized as a strength Palin’s distance from the ambitious political culture of Washington, D.C.

"This was someone who was picked because of her competence as governor, as opposed to her going out and seeking the office," the senator added.

"I’m thinking about it," he told PoltiickerNJ.com, regarding attempting to land an under-card position on a ticket with Gov. Jon Corzine.

Roberts favors Watson Coleman for lieutenant governor

Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing)Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing)Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts (D-Camden) told PolitickerNJ.com he believes Gov. Jon Corzine would do well to select Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing) as his running mate in 2009.

Watson Coleman, a veteran of the Assembly and former state party chair, would be the state’s first lieutenant governor if Corzine were to run with her and win re-election.

"He’s got to pick someone who’s compatible with his style, of course," said Roberts. "I happen to be a big fan of Bonnie Watson Coleman’s. Her strengths are that she is highly respected, very well thought of in the legislature, where she was unanimously elected majority leader, and she is highly committed to the faith-based, African-American community."

TRENTON -- Burnishing his blue collar roots and seniority in Washington, U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg today launched his re-election bid at the Trenton Marriott, promising to lead the fight for New Jersey's working families.

"I will build on my work of the last few years, to stand strong against those who attack our values that short change our state and to deliver the results that improve people's lives," said Lautenberg, who was first elected to the Senate in 1982.

Corzine likes Menendez for VP, but Rice says no

Gov. Jon Corzine likes the idea of Bob Menendez running for Vice PresidentGov. Jon Corzine likes the idea of Bob Menendez running for Vice President
Gov. Jon Corzine said that he’s not involved with Hillary Clinton’s potential choices for Vice President. But he thinks Bob Menendez would be a good one.

“First of all, it would be a great choice, but I have no idea. I’m not involved in that,” said Corzine before boarding a train that whisked him down to Washington, DC for the Chamber of Commerce’s Walk on Washington. “Clearly Bob has played a meaningful role in the national campaign because of his leadership of Hispanics for Mrs. Clinton, and he’s an able spokesperson on any of the issues he speaks out about.”

Democrats see similarities between Humphrey vs. Kennedy '68

Robert F. Kennedy campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1968Robert F. Kennedy campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1968

Working guard duty at Fort Dix in 1968, 22-year-old government issue Ray Lesniak counted himself a fortunate one because he didn't get shipped off to Vietnam.

"Even though I ain't no senator's son," said the senator, 40 years later now, quoting the Creedence Clearwater Revivial song lyrics from the older era.

He was into politics even then, and he liked Sen. Robert Kennedy for president.

"I was a huge supporter," he said.

For insiders like Lesniak who have been immersed in Democratic Party stand-offs for decades, the primary rumble between senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama bears traces of that 1968 match-up between establishment warhorse Hubert Humphrey and tousle-headed rock star Kennedy.

Largest number of new members since 1992 sworn in to Assembly

Freshman Assemblyman Ruben Ramos today walked in Gov. Jon Corzine's entourage with fellow freshman Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande.Freshman Assemblyman Ruben Ramos today walked in Gov. Jon Corzine's entourage with fellow freshman Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande.Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts today called on his fellow lawmakers to be bold and to focus on the big issues: ethics, affordable housing, healthcare and property tax reform.

"Our obligation is not to be a rubber stamp," Roberts told a group of legislators that included 25 new assembly people, or the largest number of freshmen since the Florio tax backlash of 1992.

Speaking in the War Memorial shortly after helping to swear-in the other 79 assembly people and then being sworn into office himself, 20-year veteran Roberts urged the Assembly to work hard and bring honor to the State of New Jersey.

Although he and Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce complimented each other and committed themselves to bipartisanship, the latter didn’t clap when Roberts boasted about providing the largest property relief tax package in state history in 2007.
