Maybe

The outcome of several of today's Assembly races could create some interesting State Senate races in 2007: Nelson Albano vs. Nicholas Asselta in the 1st district; Jim Whelan vs. Bill Gormley (or Frank Blee, if Gormley retires) in the 2nd; Matt Doherty vs. Sean Kean for Joe Palaia's 11th district seat; Jennifer Beck vs. Ellen Karcher in the 12th; and Bill Baroni vs. Linda Greenstein in the 14th, if Peter Inverso does not run again.

The Battle for New Jersey '05

The race for State Assembly in the 14th district is no longer the hotly contested campaign that political insiders had expected, with polling from both campaigns showing the two incumbents, Democrat Linda Greenstein and Republican Bill Baroni, with a comfortable lead. The traditional competitiveness of this Mercer/Middlesex district keeps Greenstein and Baroni in the Leans column, but now with a movement arrow towards Likely. Greenstein is running with Hamilton Councilman Dan Benson; Baroni's running mate is former South Brunswick Police Chief Michael Paquette.

In the second district, where Republican Assemblymen Frank Blee and Kirk Conover face a strong challenge from former Atlantic City Mayor James Whelan and attorney Damon Tyner, PoliticsNJ.com has added a movement arrow towards Toss Up for Conover.

Dan Benson's Surprise Party

When Democratic Assembly candidate Dan Benson entered the State House today, he thought he was there to hold a press conference criticizing GOP incumbent Bill Baroni on property taxes. But the event turned into a surprise debate when Baroni showed up to answer the attack. Baroni questioned Benson in his own property tax record as a Hamilton Township Councilman. One Assembly Democratic staffer was heard in the hallways saying "we've got to get him (Benson) out of here." Soon after, a seemingly flustered Benson (that description came from a Democrat in the room) left his own press conference, leaving Baroni alone standing alone at the podium -- the apparent winner of the impromptu debate.
