Jersey Journal: Kenny hit by car

The Jersey Journal is reporting that Senate Majority Leader Bernard Kenny was badly hurt earlier today when he was struck by a car in Hoboken. Update: a later Jersey Journal report indicates that Kenny told Police he tripped on a pothole shortly before 7AM today.

But Jim Griffin, a spokesman for the Senate Democrats, would not confirm that Kenny was hit by a car, saying that he may have just tripped, and was disoriented after his fall.

Kenny's injuries are not life threatening, Griffin said. A Hoboken city spokesman told the nespaper that the veteran Senator broke his femur and collarbone and remains in fair condition at Jersey City Medical Center.

Republicans glum about budget

“I can’t go on, I’ll go on,” wrote Samuel Beckett, a slogan the GOP would have likely found heartening Thursday, but searching for a metaphor amid the archives of absurdist 20th century drama to apply to the state budget process, Republican Sen. Leonard Lance instead selected Beckett’s most famous – and disturbing - play.

Bernie Kenny's bad memory

Senate Majority Leader Bernard Kenny, the Hudson County Democratic Chairman, told the Star-Ledger that Sandra Bolden Cunningham "would be the first African-American Senator from Hudson County, and I think that matters."  Actually, Cunningham would be the fourth African American to represent Hudson in the State Senate, and Kenny has served with the other three: Joseph Charles, a Senator from 2002 to 2003; L. Harvey Smith, a Senator for a brief time in 2003 and 2004; and the late Glenn Cunningham, who held the Senate seat for six months until his death in June 2004.

In Hoboken, they call it a friendly sign of affection

Was it a slap or a tap?

Did Senate Majority Leader Bernard Kenny hit a Hoboken official in the face yesterday, or was he just being playful?

City Councilman Michael Russo says that it was a slap, and that it hurt.  But unless veteran firefighter Tom Molta speaks up, the world may never know.

Russo claims he was having a casual, non-political conversation with Molta when the 60-year-old Kenny came running up to them, thinking they were talking politics.

Battle Stations in Hudson County

In the sea of Hudson County politics, all of those beleaguered sailors set adrift out there in the face of June 5th, Election Day, depending on their loyalties either fear or embrace the perfect storm, envisioned by that upstart pirate skipper Brian P. Stack.

Stack, the mayor of Union City and an Assemblyman, jumped out in front of the Hudson County Democratic Organization when he announced his intentions of supplanting State Sen. Bernie Kenny, who later said formally he would retire.

Now Stack is favored to win the Democratic Primary in the 33rd District, which includes Union City, West New York, Weehawken, Hoboken, Guttenberg and part of Jersey City. He already has an ally in Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner. The candidate’s also pumped money into the municipal re-election bids of the young Turks in Hoboken, who are restlessly jockeying for position to succeed Mayor David Roberts.
