WHILE ATLANTIC CITY SUFFERS, WHELAN GOES TO GALLOWAY

“This financial crisis in Atlantic City, caused by Jon Corzine’s Wall Street shell game policies, will hurt the taxpayers in Atlantic City. And it will hurt the entire region, because if critical City services like police, fire and public works cannot be funded by Council next year, Atlantic City’s appearance and safety will suffer as a tourist destination. We cannot afford to let that happen as we all know that the key to job creation in our region is having a thriving gaming destination in Atlantic City.

WHELAN BLASTS POLISTINA FOR HARMING MARKETING OF ATLANTIC CITY

NORTHFIELD – Senator Jim Whelan, responding to a Republican press conference held yesterday, blasted Assemblyman Vince Polistina for statements that harm efforts to market Atlantic City. Whelan stated:

“I understand that this is the political season and there will be some grandstanding. What I object to is that when we should be fighting for all the business we can get, Assemblyman Polistina is making false insinuations that could have a chilling effect on businesses deciding to bring their trade shows and conventions to Atlantic City.

WHELAN: CHRISTIE’S REJECTION OF FEDERAL FUNDS WOULD CUT BENEFITS FOR UNEMPLOYED NEW JERSEYANS

WHELAN: CHRISTIE’S REJECTION OF FEDERAL FUNDS WOULD CUT BENEFITS FOR UNEMPLOYED NEW JERSEYANS

Senator Jim Whelan (D-Atlantic), a Co-Chair of the Democratic State Committee’s Victory ‘09 campaign, today joined unemployed South Jersey workers at a construction site at Stockton College to slam Bush Republican candidate Chris Christie for aligning with prominent George W. Bush Republicans to reject billions of dollars in federal funding from President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) including more than $200 million to support unemployment benefits for New Jerseyans.

“Christie would have refused more than $200 million in federal stimulus funding that provides critical assistance for unemployed New Jerseyans,” said Whelan (D-Atlantic). “Christie is more interested in partisan politics than forging solutions to help struggling New Jersey families move ahead. By denying New Jerseyans this federal aid Christie would have denied assistance to nearly half a million New Jerseyans who are looking for work. These federal funds help out-of-work New Jerseyans support their families, keep a roof over their heads and pay their bills on time.”

Whelan Beach Bar Bill Approved By Environment Committee

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Sen. James Whelan (D-Atlantic) that would require the state Department of Environmental Protection to issue a general permit for food and drink concession stands on a beach at Atlantic City hotels or motels so they would not have to be removed from the beach in the off-season was approved 6-0 today by the Senate Environment Committee.

Under terms of the bill (S-2825), the general permit would be issued in lieu of a permit issued under the "Coastal Area Facilities Review Act.” The bill was amended in committee to apply only to cities where casino gambling is permitted, which limits it to Atlantic City.

VAN DREW WELCOMES CORZINE TO SPORTS BETTING LAWSUIT

Says Pushing Legislation May Move Legal Proceedings Quicker

TRENTON – Senator Jeff Van Drew, D-Cape May, Cumberland and Atlantic, issued the following statement regarding Governor Corzine’s announcement that he will be joining in the legal effort to overturn the federal ban on sports betting, and called on legislative leaders to move sports betting legislation in New Jersey to speed up the legal proceedings:

“I applaud Governor Corzine for lending his support to legal efforts, led by Senator Ray Lesniak and myself, to overturn the federal ban on sports betting. New Jersey’s gaming industry, and the larger tourism sector that depends on the vitality of that industry, cannot afford to fall behind other states in the nation when it comes to a legalized sports book.

Into final stretch in AC, both mayoral candidates must maintain fundraising mode

AC Mayor Lorenzo Langford

ATLANTIC CITY – When City Councilman Martin Small failed to secure the backing of the local Democratic organization, he lost some political mojo, at least in the eyes of the statewide party establishment.

But state Sen. (and former Mayor) Jim Whelan (D-Atlantic City) stayed loyal to his protégé and endorsed him over his old antagonist, Mayor Lorenzo Langford.

This week, both Langford and Small submitted financial disclosure reports to the state Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) that show their campaign coffers nearly depleted.

Having won a special election last year to take the reins of government from former Mayor Bob Levy and still the favorite, according to most observers of the city’s political scene, Langford reported raising $58,732 for this campaign.
