Maybe Anne Estabrook should run for Mayor of Summit this fall

With candidates who had never run in a general election, New Jersey Republicans have not won a statewide election since ex-U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Albert Hawkes defeated incumbent William Smathers in 1942. 

New Jersey Republicans have lost the last eleven U.S. Senate races; of their candidates, five had no previous general election experience. New Jersey Democrats ran first time general election candidates for statewide office with success in 1973, 1978, 1982 and 2000.

Lautenberg: $2 Million Man

U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg will report about $2 million cash-on-hand for the first quarter of 2008, which places him in the top tier of Democratic Senators running for re-election in 2008.  The 83-year-old Lautenberg is expected to seek a fifth term in the Senate next year. 

Two Republicans have been mulling statewide bids: conservative Assemblyman Michael Doherty of Warren County, who is seeking re-election to the Legislature this year; and Anne Evans Estabrook, a Summit businesswoman and former New Jersey Chamber of Commerce President.
