"Not our fight"

Add this scenario to the list of missed opportunities by the Republicans this year: the results special election convention for State Senate in the 37th district, now headed to court, will eventually need to be certified by the state Board of Canvassers, a traditionally ceremonial panel that consists of the Governor, a Democratic and Republican Senator, and a Democratic and Republican Assemblyman. Imagine the possibilities had Alex DeCroce named, for example, Kevin O'Toole, to the board on the day of the convention. O'Toole shows up at the Bergen Democratic headquarters for the closed-to-the-public special election convention and presents his credentials to the guy at the door. "I am a member of the state Board of Canvassers responsible for certifying the results of this election," O'Toole could have said, "and I am here to observe the election so that when it comes time for me to vote to certify I can be convinced that this election was run fairly and in accordance with the laws of this state."
