Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce said today Republicans want to forge a new working relationship with their Democratic colleagues based on bipartisan cooperation and mutual respect to deal with pressing problems such as high property taxes, ethics reform and fiscal discipline.

"Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts and I believe bipartisan respect and cooperation is not only possible, but that it is absolutely necessary, to repair the damage that has been done to the very fabric of government," DeCroce said at the organization of the 212th Assembly session that was held in the War Memorial in Trenton.

MERKT NAMED GOP PARLIAMENTARIAN IN ASSEMBLY

- Takes on Leadership Post in Assembly Republican Caucus -

Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce (R. - Morris, Passaic) has tapped Assemblyman Richard A. Merkt (R. - Morris) to serve as Parliamentarian for the Republican Caucus in the New Jersey Assembly. Merkt, a veteran legislator from Morris County, was elected to a fifth term in the Assembly in November and will become GOP Parliamentarian when the 212th New Jersey Legislature convenes next Tuesday. As Parliamentarian, he will also serve as a member of the Assembly Republican leadership.

'Assemblyman Merkt has emerged as a leading spokesman for the Republican Caucus in the Assembly over the past several years,' commented DeCroce, adding, 'Rick is well qualified to represent the Caucus as Parliamentarian, as well as serve in leadership.'

Merkt thanked DeCroce for his confidence in making the appointment and noted that he looks forward to participating in the Assembly Republican leadership.

'It is certainly an honor for me to be selected to serve as Republican Parliamentarian in the Assembly,' declared Merkt, 'and to assume a role in the Assembly Republican leadership team. I am grateful to Leader DeCroce for his trust in my abilities and will be pleased to serve the Caucus, in addition to my home district, in the next Legislature.'

Formal duties of the Parliamentarian's office include ensuring that the Assembly adheres to its published rules and observes established parliamentary procedures in conducting legislative business.

Merkt, who lives in Mendham Township, represents 17 towns in Morris County.
