Woodbury, NJ (October 9, 2008) – Since George LeBlanc, the Senate Democrats’ budget officer, admitted from the stand in Sweeney associate Wayne Bryant’s corruption trial that the state Property Tax Assistance and Community Development account was nothing more than an ATM for influential elected Democrats, Stephen Sweeney has remained eerily silent despite Republican Freeholder candidates Phyllis Scapellato, Larry Wallace and Dan Roberts calling on Sweeney to tell voters what he knew.
“There is no way, as head of the Sweeney-Corzine Trenton Tax Team who actually sat on the Budget and Appropriations Committee with Wayne Bryant, Stephen Sweeney can claim ignorance,” said GOP Freeholder candidate Phyllis Scapellato. “If Mr. Sweeney is smart he’ll come clean and tell the voters what he knew.”
“Sweeney’s silence is deafening,” added Republican Freeholder candidate Larry Wallace. “How he expects everyone to think he could work with Bryant on the Budget and Appropriations Committee and not know anything about the slush fund is beyond me, especially with all the ties this Freeholder Board has to Bryant.”
“Maybe Mr. Sweeney knew too much and that’s why he tabled bill S445, the Transparency in Government Act,” said GOP Freeholder candidate Dan Roberts. “If he had allowed that bill to pass then voters could simply look online to see where the money went rather than us having to ask Sweeney to tell the voters how much he knew.”
