Sweeney: “Holding Dual Offices Benefits Gloucester County.” It’s No Wonder He Fought To Keep Both Offices.

Gloucester County Republican Freeholder candidates Phyllis Scapellato, Larry Wallace and Dan Roberts are calling on the dual office holding Stephen Sweeney to explain to the voters of Gloucester County which of his hats is more important to him, especially considering at a recent debate he said that holding dual offices benefits Gloucester County.

At issue is bill S769 which was introduced in January of this year. The bill as introduced by Senator Kean and co-sponsored by Senator Bateman would have eliminated "the provision that permits current members of Legislature who hold more than one elective public office on February 1, 2008 to continue to do so if service is continuous."

"First he says he will not run for re-election to the Freeholder Board and then he sends bill S769 off to die. I wonder if anyone should believe anything that comes out of Mr. Sweeney's mouth," said GOP Freeholder candidate Phyllis Scapellato.

Republican Freeholder candidate Larry Wallace added, "This is typical Stephen Sweeney. First he doesn't even have the courage to vote on the original bill banning dual office holding, then he says he will not seek re-election to the Freeholder Board and then he kills a bill that would have forced him to choose which of his two offices he wanted to hold. There comes a time one has to ask exactly whose interests Stephen Sweeney is looking out for."

"By killing S769 Sweeney proved to the hard working families of Gloucester County that he cares more about power than doing what's right for Gloucester County," said GOP Freeholder candidate Dan Roberts. "In our debate he claimed holding both offices helps Gloucester County. Considering that is his claim Sweeney needs to tell the voters of Gloucester County exactly how killing the Transparency in Government Act helps families. He needs to explain how keeping his mouth shut when S440, a bill that would have reduced the state sales tax, never making out of committee helps Gloucester County families. The fact is, Stephen Sweeney, as the ring leader of the Sweeney-Corzine Trenton Tax Team, hurts Gloucester County every time he drives north on 295."
