Woodbury, NJ (July 24, 2008) - In an attempt to extend the Sweeney friends and family plan to the Gloucester County Board of Elections, board workers were presented with letters informing them their "layoff will begin August 1, 2008," yesterday.
In a second letter dated "July 2008," also presented to soon-to-be laid off board workers yesterday, the newly appointed Superintendent of Elections informed workers that if they are "interested in seeking employment with the Superintendent of Elections," they have until tomorrow to "submit a resume" and that interviews will begin on Monday.
"Ridiculous, this is absolutely crazy," Republican Freeholder candidate Phyllis Scapellato said. "To hand long time experienced elections workers letters informing them their jobs are gone in less than two days is just plain wrong. And then they add insult to injury by informing these workers they have less than two days to submit a resume and can interview for the job they already have on Monday. This is unprofessional, even for a Sweeney ally and Corzine appointee, and exactly why we have called for the elections board to remain bipartisan."
GOP Freeholder candidate Larry Wallace asked, "Would this have happened if there were a Deputy Superintendent of Elections appointed? Would it have happened if Sweeney didn't try to fix a system that wasn't broken?
"The answer is obviously no," Larry Wallace continued. "Sweeney got his wish and destroyed a bipartisan system with checks and balances and disguised it as good government. We can hardly wait to see who the new hires are under the Superintendent of Elections and look forward to connecting the dots all the way to folks enrolled in the Sweeney friends and family plan."
