Florham Park, NJ (May 30, 2008) – State Senator and US Senate candidate “Jersey Joe” Pennacchio said no matter what way Dick Zimmer spins it Morris County’s tax rate went down while Pennacchio served as Freeholder.
“It’s a shame that Dick Zimmer continues to try to use spin to hide from the tax breaks he took for himself,” Pennacchio said. “The fact of the matter is when I was a Freeholder we reduced taxes three years in a row, 3.5% in the first year, 2.6% in the second year and 4.5% in the third year.”
“He doesn’t want voters to compare our records in Trenton. In the state legislature Dick Zimmer voted to increase the sales tax from 5% to 6%. I voted against raising the sales tax,” Pennacchio stated.
Zimmer’s claims of being a tax cutter do not hold up when you look at his record and he knows it. In 1986 Mr. Zimmer voted to eliminate the property tax deduction from the state income tax.
“Unless you count his $12 an acre in property taxes while every one else pays thousands Dick Zimmer isn’t much of a tax cutter at all,” Pennacchio quipped.
Joe Pennacchio is a New Jersey State Senator representing the 26th Legislative District.
