Florham Park, NJ (May 7, 2008) – “Why are we no longer leading the world in solar energy output?” was the question asked by US Senate candidate and State Senator “Jersey Joe” Pennacchio referring to published reports that state America was once the leader in solar energy output, producing 40 percent of global output in the 1990s.
The same reports state the United States now accounts for less than 8 percent of global output.
“With foreign oil choking our economy and an outdated farm bill that has seen six extensions and still offers too much in ethanol subsidies it’s time to lead the world again in solar energy output,” Pennacchio remarked.
“ Pennacchio added, “With projects like MIT’s Solar Revolution Project and solar plants under construction in New Mexico and Arizona there is no reason America cannot lead the way in solar energy production again.”
Pennacchio has proposed we set a goal of 10 years to achieve energy independence and said everything must be put on the table as part of a bold plan to achieve the goal.
“While solar energy is important and we can once again lead the world in solar energy production it has to be part of a comprehensive plan,” Pennacchio said. “We still have to continue to look at other sources of energy production including solar, wind, coal gasification, tar sands, bio-fuels, ANWR, we can leave no stone unturned and must do what it takes to achieve energy independence.”
Joe Pennacchio is a New Jersey State Senator representing the 26th Legislative District.
