SCALERA: HORSE-RACING DEAL KEEPS
MEADOWLANDS IN WINNER'S CIRCLE
(NUTLEY) - Assemblyman Fred Scalera today applauded a three-year agreement reached last night that will steer $90 million dollars to the state's horse-racing industry to supplement race purses and ensure the stability of "the sport of kings" in New Jersey.
Under the agreement, Atlantic City's casinos will provide the purse supplement funding.
The 36th Legislative District, which Scalera represents, includes East Rutherford - home of the Meadowlands Racetrack.
Scalera (D-Essex) released the following statement:
"Everyone who played a role in crafting this agreement - Governor Corzine, my colleagues in the Legislature, and officials in the gaming industry - deserves congratulations on reaching a deal that preserves horse-racing in our state.
"This agreement protects the hundreds of jobs the Meadowlands Racetrack supports and the millions of dollars in economic activity produced by racing fans.
"Even with a three-year guarantee that high-caliber races will continue to be held in New Jersey, the horse-racing and breeding industry's long-term viability in our state must still be ensured.
"I will continue to work with the Governor, my legislative colleagues, and the casino and racing industries to craft a long-range plan that will ensure New Jersey remains home to our nation's best and most exciting races for years to come."
