Ron Paul wins conservative straw poll

Supporters of presidential candidate Ron Paul stampeded the Forge in Woodbridge this morning and gave their candidate a blow-out victory in a straw poll conducted by the right wing New Jersey bloggers' aggregate, Conservatives with Attitude (CWA).

Michaal Illions, a candidate for U.S. Congress in the 7th district, read the results of 207 participants.

Paul garnered 126 votes; former Sen. Fred Thompson received 27 votes; former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney received 22; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, 15; former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 11; U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, 4; and Sen. John McCain, 2.

There were three or four more late votes tallied after Illions' initial reading that were scattered among the candidates and didn't alter the standings.

For more videos on the event, please see Max Pizarro's video blog at right, and stay tuned for more print coverage from the event in this space tonight and tomorrow.

Ron Paul Cures Voter Apathy

Finally a statesman that embraces the Constitution instead of trying to find a way around it.

Wooo!

That's great news for traditional Republicans! I wasn't expecting that one. That's nice for Sabrin, too.

I think this proves a couple

I think this proves a couple of things.

Ron Paul Republicans are not solely fringe elemental kooks who chase television personalities down streets, claim that 9-11 was a government plot, or that every election is rigged in favor of whomever the "secret shadow government" decides to elect. Of course these very small sub-sects of the movement have made national attention due to the heavy media bias towards our efforts, but by no means do these people represent the core of our group.

What this showed today was that we are REAL REPUBLICANS, who are sophisticated, well read and educated, passionate about the future of both the party and the United States, and are energized and determined to steer our party back to its core principals of Freedom and Liberty, Peace and Prosperity, all while respecting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I am very impressed with the way my fellow Ron Paul Republicans handled themselves for the most part today, and we definitely made inroads in promoting our candidate and our message.

Good Job guys,

J. Douglas Fisher

Kudos, Murray Sabrin

I attended the straw poll and marked my ballot for Dr. Ron Paul.  His surrogate, Murray Sabrin, a candidate himself for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate was brilliant in both presentation and in rebuttal for/defense of Ron Paul's public policy proposals and programs.  He was nothing short of awesome.  Sabrin knows the issues, inside and out and from every perspective.  The other panelists made good a very fine accounting of their candidadtes as well.

On the other hand, I took something else away from the event.  First, unlike the previous commentor, I thought that far too many of the Ron Paul supporters were rude, impolite and rowdy, often interrupting other surrogate speakers with boos and catcalls and shouting down these fine, dedicated people while they were speaking.

This enthusiastic behavior, while fine and appropriate at a partisan rally, is wholly inappropriate in such a venue.  While Dr. Sabrin was doing his utmost to advance the cause and credibility of Dr. Paul among potential supporters, these rowdies were undermining any positive effect Dr. Sabrin's grandiloquence was having or could have had on an otherwise receptive audience.

It is beyond cavil that Dr. Paul has attracted many new and idealistic people to the political arena; at least some may stay in and work within the GOP, providing much-needed new blood and fresh thinking in the ranks of the Grumpy Old Poops after the general election is past.

I spoke with many of the Ron Paul supporters whom I have never seen at any prior GOP event.  More than a few of these folks were over the age of 35 and admitted they had never voted or been active in polics before, but always harbored political sentiments similar to those of Ron Paul and Murray Sabrin.  it may be that their enthusiasm for Ron Paul and Murray Sabrin is just the release of pent-up frustration with the current moribund political paradigm and the manifestation of the motivation that the idea of liberty can and should engender in all of us.

No matter.  I hope these people maintain their enthusiam for and level of involvement in the political process.  If the GOP needs anything right now, it's unbridled enthusiasm for its program.  But the Paui and Sabrin campaigns should stress to its avid adherents that while "extremism in defense of liberty is no vice", extremely rude behavior in carrying a message shuts the ears, eyes and minds of others who desperately need to know of their message.  More now than ever . . .

A friendly suggestion . . .

Re: Ron Paul wins conservative straw poll

You have to love it when the entire NJ Ron Paul "organization" crashes an event... I get the CWA emails and while they are interesting, I would love their focus to be on rebuilding the stae GOP by prsenting viable options and solutions for voters.

It was a fundraiser

Most of those Ron Paul supporters are political newbies who may or may not remain involved in the GOP.  I would not presume to speak for all of them, but it seems these folks are less interested in builiding or rebuilding an ideologically bankrupt political force based upon the same bankrupt ideology.  Just my impression from the conversations I've had with some of them.

They'd probably stick if the real goal of the GOP was to reinstitute a regime of political liberty instead of empire building and crony capitalism.  These people cannot be begged, borrowed or bought with promises of handouts, subsidies or patronage.  They want nothing less or more than what the Founders promised them: the legacy of liberty. If the GOP adopts liberty as its goal, I imagine these folks would be the most loyal elephants in the herd.

This straw poll was just a fundraiser, really.  Come and pay 20 bucks and you get to vote for your favorite.  The Paul folks didn't crash the party . . . they accepted CWA's open invitation and paid their money.  CWA could have placed any restrictions on participation it deemed appropriate.  But they didn't.

This reminds me of Faux Snooze's complaint that Ron Paul supporters responded to their invitation to text message their votes after the televised debates.  Paul supporters did so, and Ron Paul won all of the post-election polls.  Then Sure Insanity complained that Ron Paul supporters participated at a greater level than anyone else did.  Why should Sure Insanity complain?  Faux Snooze made the rules . . . and could have made any rules they wanted.  Why complain about the result?  On what basis?  That you didn't like it?

Come on . . .

Ronulans decloaking in our sector Captain!

"Ron Paul Republicans are not solely fringe elemental kooks "

Actually, the Ron Paul supporters that were there proved exactly that.

I was there, I was the person that asked the question about prosecuting the war against Islamic Jihadists.

The behavior of the "Ronulans" was appaling and I sincerely doubt many of them were even Republicans. I believe a great deal of them were anti-war activists pretending to be Republicans.

I was foolish enough to allow myself to be sucked into a conversation with one. She stopped just shy of calling me a baby killer and I walked away when she informed me "We are living in a police state here in the US."

I was happy to have met some good people there. But all told, thanks to the Ron Paul supporters, the whole thing was tainted.
