President Bush's plans to reduce the number of troops in Iraq and bolster the strength in Afghanistan are supported by Roland Straten, Republican candidate for Congress in NJ's 8th District.
"The success of the surge makes these troop reductions and redeployments possible," say Straten. "I supported the surge strategy when it wasn't popular, and it is gratifying to see it succeed and get us closer to a real victory in the War on Terror."
President Bush announced today that 8,000 troops will return home from Iraq by the end of the year. He also announced that a Marine Battalion would be deployed to bolster the effort in Afghanistan to be followed by other reinforcements in the near future.
"These moves prove that the surge strategy is working," Straten notes. "Even Senator Obama, after long periods of criticism and denial, has reluctantly had to admit that it was the right thing to do."
Roland Straten is a native of Wayne and a 39-year resident of Montclair. Straten served as a Naval Officer in the Vietnam War and was President of Associated Fire Protection in Paterson before deciding he wanted to serve the people of the Eighth District in Congress. Straten has served as chair of the Paterson Economic Development Corporation and as a Commissioner on the Paterson Fire Commission.
