Roland Straten, Republican candidate for Congress in New Jersey's Eighth District today proposed The Civil Rights Act For Equal Educational Opportunity, a measure that would require states to provide equal funding for children in both public and non-public schools. The announcement was made at a press conference on the first day of school for teachers at Public School #5 in Paterson and is supported by a bi-partisan coalition of community leaders. Straten, who has made school choice a cornerstone of his campaign said "It's time to make fundamental changes in the way we operate and fund our nation's schools. School choice will dramatically improve the academic achievement of all our children and improve the academic performance of all our schools."
The legislation would also require states to allow home-schoolers to operate schools and leave all matters of funding and standards to the states provided they are equally disbursed. "This would save the lives of countless kids across the country who are suffering in failing public schools. Shouldn't every child have the same opportunity to succeed in life? " says Straten. "We need to break the public school system monopoly. With choice you get competition, and with competition you get reform."
Straten concluded, "Most parents I talk to overwhelmingly support the idea of choice. It is the bureaucrats and teachers unions who resist this purely out of self-interest. Our first and only concern should be how best to educate children and it is clear that in far too many communities we are failing. School choice is the solution".
Roland Straten is a native of Wayne and a 39 year resident of Montclair. Roland served as a Naval Officer in the Vietnam War and was President of Associated Fire Protection in Paterson before deciding he wanted to serve the people of the Eighth District. Roland has served as chair of the Paterson economic Development Corporation and as Commissioner on the New Jersey Fire Commission.
