This is
a great cartoon!
Maybe the GOP should stop sending us voters TRASH for candidates
I am very happy Dr. Sabrin's campaign has been willing to call-it-the-way-it-is.
Can you imagine if we found out about Jersey Joe's manifesto in the Fall when Lautenberg would hang him on his own words?
Can you imagine if we found out about Playboy Andy's illegal activities in the Fall?
Now you know why the Republican Party continues to lose. It seems Dr. Sabrin is the only candidate who REALLY wants to WIN.
MESSAGE to GOP Leaders: STOP sending us TRASH for candidates - YOU are polluting our system!
Go Murray Go!
Great Cartoon!
One of your best, Rob.
NJRonaldReagan
...has a point. Sabrin is pointing out the political liabilities that Democrats will only exploit to their fullest come election time--and you can't argue about that.
Murray Sabrin has plenty of liabilities
First, he is a hypocrit. Why did he use tax payer money to fund his gubernatorial run when he is for limited government? And speaking of that campaign, didn't Murray know better than to hire white supremacist Hal Turner as his campaign manager? Murray Sabrin has a lot of liabilities.
BEST ONE
BEST ONE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Can you imagine if we found out about Playboy Andy's illegal activities in the Fall?"
And just what illegal activities might you be referring to?
"Political correctness is tyranny with manners." - Charlton Heston
NJRonaldReagan -- that's funny
So what you are saying is that Sabrin was the first person to discover that Pennachio had written the manifesto and that Andy Unanue was a party-boy?
Give me a break. That was public knowledge and the political reporting class were the ones who put it out there. Sabrin just jumped on the bandwagon to make political points. Lauding him as a truth teller for that is revisionism at its height.
Good cartoon - my sentiments
Good cartoon - my sentiments exactly.
While I agree that it's better to vett the weaknesses of the candidates now, rather than to let Lautenberg do it all summer, I strongly feel that Sabrin's camp could have done it more elegantly.
Sure, I also agree that there's plenty of corruption within the NJ GOP establishment, but what purpose does Sabrin's campaign serve by alienating the very people that can make or break his run before it even gets started?
I've seen the comments about rallying his followers into a David vs. Goliath type of fight, but I don't believe that that's a winning strategy. Perhaps they just felt damned if they took this approach and damned if they didn't. If he's truly of a mind to clean up the corruption, he can't exactly ride the backs of the establishment into office, and then turn on them and look like real scum... At least this way, he may look sleazy, but his message can stay consistent.
I guess...
Murray Went off the Reservation...
Negative campaigns are pretty normal for primary challenges, but at some point Murray forgot who he was opposing and was a tad bit too critical on those he was opposing.
For Instance - There was no need to call for Pennacchio's exit for a 17 year old thing he wrote.
I didn't agree with a bunch of the stuff he wrote, but he shouldn't resign for putting his ideas out ther 17 years ago, give me a break.
And they jumped on Andy Unanue within sceonds; calling him a "slick playboy" was pretty unneccessary. It makes for good entertainment, but doesn't really help Murray's case.
But where they really went off the reservation is their crusade against the NJGOP and several county chairs.
I know I'll get branded as defending the establishment here, but does anyone think it's the job of a US Senate candidate to go after Chairman Wilson and a few county chairmen? That job's reserved for challengers of those chairs, and last I checked Murray's not running for NJGOP Chairman or BCRO Chairman, or any of those. A U.S. Senate candidate who focuses most of his time on attacking the NJGOP and County Chairman is a lost cause.
If Murray had stayed on his message of limited government and stuck with the economics stuff, it would have never gotten to this level and he may have gotten even more support. It's my assumption that Murray's actually lost support and I know a few of his backers admit they don't like the negative campaign.
Slash and Burn Kamikaze campaigns make for great entertainment, but in the end they are either forgotten or they damage the little resources some County organizations have and give the Democrats a much better shot at winning. (See the primary challenge for Republican Freeholder candidates in Bergen County)
Funny
People complain that Sabrin isn't talking about the issues, but that's only because none of the other candidates will debate him as he has been pushing for. Sabrin obviously knows more than either Unanue or Pennacchio; he understands the economy, the Constitution, health care, and foreign policy. Why? Because he is a professor and his career is understanding issues.
Sabrin wants to get some attention so he is attacking his opponents' ludicrous positions like Pennacchio's Nationalist Agenda. Does anyone doubt for a minute that if PolitickerNJ cared for substance that Sabrin wouldn't be putting out Press Releases explaining the natural rate of interest and how the systematic lowering of the rate through the artificial fiduciary media has caused our current economic crisis.
If you want Sabrin to talk about the issues, give him the forum to.
That Makes Sense....Not
If Murray were as good a candidate as his supporters say, he wouldn't have to resort to childish tactics such as name calling. He would be able to craft a message, based on his platform, that the average person would understand and appreciate.
Curious
I am curious - is Murray still a Republican this week or did yet again switch parties when it is obvious that he won't win an election?
Editor's Note:
"Does anyone doubt for a minute that if PolitickerNJ cared for substance that Sabrin wouldn't be putting out Press Releases explaining the natural rate of interest and how the systematic lowering of the rate through the artificial fiduciary media has caused our current economic crisis?"
Actually, PolitickerNJ.com provides all candidates, party organizations and elected officials with passwords that enable them to post press releases directly to this website. There are no limits on content, length or frequency.
Murray's Mistake
Murray's mistake was not that he campaigned negatively but that he did so bluntly instead of subtly. Most candidates campaign negatively through the use of push polls, rhetoric, and third parties they can safely disassociate from. Murray is playing the game the best he can and the fact that he doesn't play it as well as other politicians is a good thing in my mind. I hear Democrats calling Republicans "racists", "gun nuts", and "warmongers", namecalling is nothing new and has been used by every candidate including Joe Pennaccio.
My bet is that Murray has gotten upset over the fact that he has been shut out of some county committee conventions and had to do something to be heard.

P.S. I am ready for the flaming.
Wrong
Being a good candidate has nothing to do with being understood or getting elected. If Thomas Jefferson were alive today and wrote of Lockean property theory and classical liberalism he would be criticized as a pompous intellectual. Some times ideas are complicated and if you are not going to spend the time understanding them beyond a 10 second soundbite, you shouldn't be voting. Sabrin is not conniving and manipulative enough to be a good politician. He has a hobby that immediately discounts him from getting elected. Is it sleeping with hookers? Clubbing baby seals? Nope. He enjoys reading books and understanding issues. Establishment hacks hate this sort of subversion.
Being a Good Candidate
Being a good candidate has everything to do with the ability to communicate. Like it or not, everyone aged 18 and over has the ability to vote. This is why it is important to be able to communicate. Ronald Reagan, for instance, was great because he ran as a conservative, and because he was able to communicate his conservative principles in a manner that the average person understood and appreciated.
Editor's Note
That is correct, but then explain to me why the press releases don't get the same attention as the front page cartoon that portrays Sabrin negatively?
I understand the position of politickernj. Given that a site has a certain amount of front page space the editors need to choose material that will appeal to their readers and increase their traffic. I should not have said that PolitickerNJ doesn't care about substance, but rather their readers do not. The low level of discourse here is primarily a function of the fact that you are covering politicians. Politicians are generally vacuous knaves filled with rhetoric; the coverage follows this fact.
I would like to see PolitickerNJ host an online debate between Pennacchio Sabrin and whoever else the GOP wants to put it. It will be abundantly clear that Sabrin has more than a fifth grade "we good they bad" understanding of the world. Unfortunately, if he were to begin speaking with polysyllabic words the bulk of the viewers would turn off because "goldarnit, thiz is too interlectual."
Being a Good Candidate
Eric, you have a firm understanding of politics. Being a good candidate is not about philosophy, principles, or reality. It is about being able to convince the masses of something that is patently not true.
In your mind, Mugabe, Castro, and Amin make a better candidates than Sabrin because they were successful and able to get the support of the masses.
You would do well to learn a little bit about the political philosophy of our founders who warned against democracy. Democracy is a process, nothing more, nothing less. If 51% of the people decide that John McCain will be the best president or that all redheads should die then it does not make it so. An intellectual who understands rhetoric (as I believe Murray is) is a powerful balance against democracy. He is able to wield powerful (correct) ideas and explain them to the masses. He is not a good candidate because he can speak well, he is a good candidate because he has the principle that is so lacking from this country.
It's the economy stupid, and finances, stupid
Dr. Sabrin all the way, despite stones (beans!)(pharmaceuticals too!) being thrown his way by the establishment leaders. Way to go Murray!
Funny Cartoon
But the devastation of the NJGOP over the past decade by it's leaders 'pales' in comparison.
We're not worthy.
We, the great unwashed, are clearly not worthy of the great gifts that his Murray-ness has apparently deigned fit to bestow upon us. We struggle with monetary policy, economic geography and polysyllabic vocabulary. We probably could not even gain admission into the low to middle tier institution that Murray teaches at. How can we ever hope to appreciate his keen political acumen and policy initiatives? Is he trying to save us from ourselves? Perhaps we would all be better off if he found another charity case.
The point of the cartoon is not candidate qualifications, nor is even electability (or, in Murray's case, the lack thereof). The cartoon is a statement about his campaign tactics and the tactics of his surrogates. Whether we uses one syllable ("dumb") or as many as 5 ("reprehensible"), the tactics of the Sabrin campaign have been vile, childish, counter-productive, mean-spirited (see I can hyphenate too) and, in the end, they will surely backfire. How does "disco-playboy" elevate the debate? Fascist manifesto? Sure, you hear that word in kindergarten every day. There are no negative connotations (4 syllables) there. Sabrin has not highlighted the weaknesses of his opponents; he has engaged in nothing more than old-fashioned name-calling. It's not appropriate at recess, and it's not appropriate in a US Senate campaign.
I don't always agree with Steve Lonegan but kudos to him for taking a stand againsy pointless vituperativeness (i'm on a roll now).
It's not attention span and it's not IQ. Murray has not communicated any ideas. He has communicated nothing but bile and invective. Any chance he ever had of communicating an idea is gone forever because people have tuned out the negativity.
He has no business in the US Senate.
He can never win an election in this state
Welcome to unelectable fringe candidate - opolis; population:Murray
Where to begin??
Eric is right in that having good ideas or being smart doesn't get you elected. Being able to convey your ideas and motivate others to act does. Bret Schundler...Steve Lonegan...great ideas and good at motivating those who agree with them. The trick to winning is to motivate those who otherwise don't care.
Rbard, I think the sentiment in this cartoon and among those commenting on it is that Dr. Sabrin isn't "wielding powerful ideas and explaining them to the masses" but spending his time talking about junk about which no voter cares - inside baseball. And the manner in which he has done so does not make him appear to be intellectual or even passionate, just angry. Reality - no one votes for the angry guy. There is big difference between being a good (successful) candidate and being a good (succesful) lawmaker. For better or worse, you have to be the first in order to get the chance to be the second.
ISSUES, issues, ISSUES
I've read everyone's comments and the comments which are most questionable are the ones where they say "all Murray Sabrin has done is throw mud"; well I actually did 15 seconds of research and looked at his website www.MurraySabrin.com to look at his press releases and WHAT did I find (ISSUES, issues, and more ISSUES)? (here is the link so you don't have to do your own searching http://www.murraysabrin.com/PressReleases.aspx)
How come these ISSUES are not discussed or there isn't a cartoon about Murray Sabrin wanting to legalize freedom by lowering the drinking age, or a cartoon about Murray Sabrin calling for all the combat troops to come home from Iraq, or a cartoon that discusses Murray Sabrin's concerns about the Federal Reserve policies? HOW COME?
How come Jersey Joe has only agreed to debate Murray Sabrin ONCE? There are people on this website who are "backing" Andy Unanue and they have NO IDEA what his positions are on the issues nor the ISSUES.
Dr Sabrin a thorn at NJ GOP and Democrats sides.
Dear NJRonaldReagan and others who doubt Dr. Sabrin:
The New York Times, The Record and the Star-Ledger would love to have you believe that Dr. Sabrin is a fringe candidate. The Republican establishment and Democratic machine would love you to believe that Dr. Sabrin is unelectible. Jersey Joke would love you to believe that he is the voice of NJ (see the Manifesto for details). And yes, do not forget Dr. Paul, who apparently has spent decades in the US Congress by mere accident or so says the New York Times and others (see above).
However, the fact is that they are running shitless upon this simple message:
It is the economy stupid and finances, stupid.
Will Sabrin beat either
Will Sabrin beat either Lautenberg or Andrews?
I didn't think so. Shut-up everybody! Sabrin is dead, and he's taking the GOP with him.
