ROBERTS STATEMENT ON ASSEMBLY VOTE FOR DEDICATING
FULL PENNY OF SALES TAX FOR PROPERTY TAX CUTS
(TRENTON) - The General Assembly today advanced a proposed state constitutional amendment sponsored by Speaker Joseph J. Roberts Jr. that would permanently dedicate the final one-half cent of last year's penny increase in the sales tax to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the state's new property tax cut.
If passed by a supermajority of the Senate, the proposed amendment (ACR-20) would appear on this November's General Election ballot, where it would require the support of a majority of voters to take effect. Senate President Richard J. Codey recently announced his support for the measure.
If approved by New Jersey voters, the amendment would provide at least $1.4 billion annually to sustain maximum 20 percent property tax cuts for a majority of homeowners and enhanced rebate checks for renter families.
After the Assembly's 79-1 vote, Roberts (D-Camden) released the following statement:
"Dedicating the remaining half-cent from last year's sales tax increase is vital to achieving the long-term sustainability of property tax cuts.
"Voters should have the ability to make property tax relief and reform state government's top priority not just this year, but every year.
"Promises of property tax relief should not be an annual rite in Trenton, but a permanent right in the state constitution."
