Hackensack – Today, Senate Candidate Michael Wildes (D-Englewood) as well as Assembly Candidates Charles “Kenâ€? Zisa (D-Hackensack) and Cid Wilson (D-Leonia) called on Loretta Weinberg and running mates Valerie Huttle and Gordon Johnson to explain their failure to mention property taxes anywhere on their campaign website. Â
“The property tax crisis has reached critical mass for the 37th District’s residents,â€? said Wildes. “Despite more than a quarter century of legislative experience between them, they have never placed property taxes at the top of their priority list. Their silence on this issue speaks volumes.â€? Â
The flashy site, which proclaims that the trio to is “really helping people, fails to address any of the issues presently facing the 37th’s working families including the heavy cost of education, ethics reform and out of control spending in Trenton.
“Instead of an admission, they’ve chosen an omission,â€? Zisa said. “Our opponents couldn’t fill a closet with the number of people whose taxes they’ve helped reduce and rather than confront this failure they’ve chosen to simply bury their heads in the sand. Sadly, that’s a luxury the district’s taxpayers cannot afford.â€? Â
Weinberg and company’s silence on property taxes should come as no surprise, since their record is nothing to write home about. During their time in the Legislature, Weinberg and her team have supported a host of new taxes, including surcharges on driving violations, a new tax on businesses in 2002, a new realty fee in 2003, gaming taxes, taxes on surgery, billboard tax extensions, hotel taxes and even a new tax on tires. Â
“It’s just another sign that their priorities aren’t ours,â€? said Wilson, who previously served on Governor Corzine’s Property Tax Policy Group. “While Weinberg, Huttle and Johnson are looking for more tax increases to support, the rest of us are left looking for ways to pay their bills.â€? Â
