STRATEN TO CORZINE: NJ NEEDS SALES TAX HOLIDAY

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine should get behind a plan to cut the State's sales tax in half during the critical holiday shopping season says Roland Straten, Republican Congressional candidate from NJ's Eighth District.

"With the all the financial turmoil, cutting the sales tax would stimulate New Jersey's economy and help prevent people from losing their jobs", says Straten.

"The holiday season is make or break time for many businesses under normal circumstances, and we all know these are not normal circumstances. It is imperative that we do everything we can to keep the economy going".

Sixteen states across the country have some form of sales tax holiday. The New Jersey proposal would lower the 7% sales tax to 3.5% for five weeks from November 27th thru January 4th. Any lost revenue would be made up for with increased economic activity and spending cuts says Straten.

"People from all over the tri-state area would have incentive to shop in New Jersey. That would mean increased consumer spending, more money to the state, and better job security at a time when unemployment is at a five year high in New Jersey", says Straten.

"I would even go further and propose that we permanently lower the sales tax to 5%. That would really help the state's economy".
